Temple Villa Notes
Another win for Villa in S.F.A.I cup
U-12 S.F.A.I. Cup (5th round)
Temple Villa 3 Avenue United (Clare) 2
Temple Villa under 12's recorded an historic victory over Avenue United from Clare to qualify for the last sixteen of this prestigious national cup competition in Clara on Sunday last.
Villa who played into a stiff breeze for the first half had to soak up some early pressure from the visitors with their best chance well saved by Villa keeper Ronan Farrell. As the game settled down, Villa got their passing game going and the exciting runs of Aidan Burke caused all sorts of problems for the Avenue defence. It was from one of these runs that Villa won their first corner and almost took the lead when Anthony Allen was very unlucky to see his well-hit shot come back off the crossbar. Villa controlled the game at this stage with Kieran Egan and Kieran Martin dominating matters in the middle of the field with their shrewd passing setting up many attacks. With twenty minutes gone a long-headed clearance from Declan Donohoe found Anthony Allen who raced past his marker and finished low to the net from the edge of the penalty area. On the stroke of half time, Avenue equalised, scoring from a poorly defended free kick.
Villa started the second period very well with full-backs Brian Carroll and Ben Moran pushing forward at every opportunity while Daniel Seery worked very hard down the left wing. Fifteen minutes into the half, Villa regained the lead when an inch perfect pass from Kieran Egan found Anthony Allen who rounded the advancing keeper before calmly sliding the ball home from close range.
With their tails up, Villa continued to press forward and the third goal followed when Callum McCormack found Andrew Killane wide on the left who played a beautiful pass to Anthony Allen whose path to a certain goal was blocked by an unfortunate defender who only managed to divert the ball into his own net.
Avenue, to their credit were not giving up and gave Villa a fright when they scored their second right at the death but it proved too little too late as the final whistle was greeted by Villa cheers.
This was another outstanding performance from this Villa side who seem to improve with every game coming against one of the top schoolboy clubs in Clare. Villa's reward is a tough fixture away to either Salthill Devon or Cherry Orchard in the last sixteen. For the record the last time a Villa team got to this stage was at U-16 level and the opposition was Cherry Orchard, Villa won 2-1. The club would like to thank Clara Town for the use of their impressive facilities which must be the envy of all clubs in the area and also to the large number of Villa supporters who continue to turn out to support their team.
