Wednesday

I know there is atleast 2 wednesday supporters on this board but im the sure there is a hell of alot more owls of this board. I remember a few years back there was a fan club and i think it was based in tallaght. Im only 22 so i wouldnt of been travelling to matches very often back then. I was over in Birmingham for the game on sat and see a group of irish coventry supporters wolves, and brimingham supporter groups and it got me thinking that maybe i should start to get a wednesday fan club going.Not really too sure how to go about it but would love a bit of insight and would peple be interested.Hopefully a few owls will come out from the dark, Excuse the pun!

Well there's myself and Owlsfan knocking around here anyway, I think there might be a few more Owls fans registered too. Personally I know, or half-know, 4 more in Limerick, so they might be interested in joining. Not too sure how you would go about setting this up, but an Irish based Wednesday Supporters group would be a good idea. Have you joined the official supporters club?

I used to be a member of the Irish branch of the supporters club and we'd meet in the North Star Hotel in Amiens Street. I published a magazine for the club called "Rare Owl Times" but I used to slag off David Pleat and they didn't like it and I eventually left. It was run by a guy called Gerry Green, having originally been formed by Dave O'Hanlon. The supporters clubs meetings used to appear in the Evening Herald some years back - not sure if they do anymore.

I'll never forget the humilation of watching a game on TV in a pub when Wednesday lost 7-1 I think to Blackburn with some of the supporters. We were jeered out of the place by the locals :o

Is that the 7-2 defeat to Blackburn you're talking about? I was watching it with my brother, who happens to be a Blackburn supporter (where did our mother go wrong?), still didn't we beat them 5-1 in the return game?

I'm sure I heard the story before but have forgotten - where did the name Wednesday come from?

We started off as a cricket club called Wednesday Cricket Club, and were officially formed by members of this cricket club on a Wednesday, so they decided to keep the cricket club name for the football team

BY Blackburn - yes. Sorry, just one of my pet aversions that has slipped in to the language. Loss to, defeat by. I think it has come from the USA.

I was also at Hillsboro to see the Ows concede 7 against Forest!! Brought a guy who had never been to a soccer match to that game and who knew nothing about soccer. He thought it was very enjoyable and was wondering why all the Owls' fans were getting so agitated.

I remember the only comeback I had against my brother that night was that Carbone had scored the goal of the month against them :o



As for the Forest game, wasn't that the year they went down and all?

:D And don't forget the hammering at St James Park a few years ago. I recall another tanking home to Leeds 6 -1 in the early 90's. :D

It's just the ones I was at I was talking about, apart from the Blackburn one. Most humiliations are lost in the mist of time as they are common place although I vaguely remember another one at Hillsboro at home to Everton that I was at. 5 or possibly 6. However, we have our little moments like the League Cup Final victory over Man U in 1991 and the Cup Final defeats in 1966 and 1993 and the very good team Ron Atkinson built in the 1990s.

The most recent wheels started to fall off the day Di Canio pushed over a referee. It was mostly all downhill after that, although I did enjoy the play-off win over mighty Hartlepool. My brother was also at that game supporting the latter :eek:

There are a few guys in work waiting in anticipation of the odds for the Championship next season. We all reckon that Weds could be a surprise package and are hoping for something generous like 33-1 as a little ew bet, considering their form under Laws. If they can improve the home form and the fans can encourage rather than moan then it could prove a nice bet. I have family in Sheffield who are all big Weds supporters, and my mum is a fan!! I've been to a few games myself with them. I was at the boxing day 3 -3 draw years ago with Man Utd. The atmosphere at that game was the best I have ever witnessed. Hillsborough has something unique when it come to the volume of atmosphere, I don't think there is a ground that can match it for acoustics.

Owlsfan a mad Wednesday and Ireland fan used to live across the road from me (Kimmage). He went out to the Bulgaria away game in the 70's (he brought me back a programme which I still have). And he used to travel over to watch Wednesday a lot. Ever bump into anyone from Kimmage who follows Wednesday in your travels?

Never met an Irishman at a Wednesday game which isn't too surprising. Don't think he was in the Supporters' Club either as he sounds like a contemporary of mine. Most were a fair bit younger, attracted by the fleeting success of 1991 and the 2 Cup Finals of 1993. I wonder how many have stayed true to the faith. My godchild became a Wednesday fan. I even brought him to Hillsboro but he couldn't stand the ribbing at school and became a Man U fan, but told his mother not to tell me :o

My former captain / coach was a Wednesday fan. He's now a FG councillor in Sth Dublin.

Whatever happened SWFC's blue version of the classic Arsenal / Hibs style strip? Was that only temporary or were the stripes a relatively recent addition?

That was an abberation of the 1960s. The stripes were always the traditional club colours and as the fortunes of the club started to plummet, they went back to the stripes. Didn't do much good though :(

I've been a Wednesday fan since the days of Lee Chapman and Brian Marwood, though I've only recently started to be able afford the odd trip to Hillsborough!

The trip to the play-off final in Cardiff rates as one of the best days ever :)

Roll on next season!
