Please settle a bet?

Can anybody tell me when the May Bank holiday was introduced to Republic of Ireland?

I got married on the May Bank Holiday weekend in 2001 so it was before that.

AFAIK, It was brought in by the Labour Party when they were last in coalition government.

May bank holiday

I have a bet of 100 lids with me bird on this and can't find it anywhere on the net. I say our seventh anniversary is on the May Bank Holiday wkend, she say it not around seven years, The answers of you guys backs up my theory, but I need proof!
