Bohemians transfer target Chris Turner, the captain of the Northern Ireland under-21 international team, has been handed bail by a Belfast court following an incident, described by a Crown lawyer as sectarian, in Coleraine last weekend.

The 21-year-old is charged with causing actual bodily harm to a man in an altercation at the junction of Captain Street and Killowen Street in Coleraine.

Lawyer Charles McKay, for the Crown, said: “The victim is from the Roman Catholic community, Turner is from the Protestant community and police investigations suggest this was a sectarian incident.”

Formerly a trainee with English League side Derby County, Turner spent the 2006 season with eircom League Premier Division side Sligo Rovers.

He had been expected to complete a move to Bohs – managed by his former Sligo boss Sean Connor – this week.

Bail conditions imposed by Lord Justice Higgins at Belfast High Court on Tuesday include a 10pm curfew and the proviso that he reside at his home address in Articlave, Co Derry – although he can apply to have the latter condition altered should his move to Bohs go through.

Why would Bohs even consider signing him now after this (if it is true ?)

My understanding of the situation was that Turner was the victim of the sectarian abuse. He was called an orange b*****d or something to that effect. This does not excuse the fact that he assaulted some guy, but this thread suggests he should not be welcome in Eircom League grounds because of the sectarian abuse. Thoughts?

The court heard Turner claimed in a police interview the man had called him an "Orange b*****d".

I hope we keep him despite all this , he is a wonderful prospect and Sean "Satan" Connor was desperate to get his hands on him for Bohs , Linfield were supposed to be interested too.

definately not.

ABH is a serious offense and any person who is involved should face the full rigours of the law, espicially a sports man who has an increased profile in the community.

however this reminds me of a galway intercounty hurler who didn't even receive the proverbial slap on the wrist for a worse assault - allegedly of course :rolleyes:

So are all players that are found guilty of ABH or other serious crimes banned from the Eircom League?

What difference does it make to him playing football? Its a well known fact that a former Derry City player received a suspended sentence for assault last year and there was no furore about it.

Surely not, Barry Ferguson was guilty of that several times for Longford on visits to Dalyer but we still signed him.
I know of numerous stories from my native "royal county" of GAA players carrying out acts of ABH and getting away scot free. I wonder if the outraged people here would be on their high horses if some guy did it because he was called a fenian b****rd?

I agree. Not condoning what he did if indeed he is found guilty but I do think the reaction on here is way over the top.

That's true. An assault in reaction to a sectarian taunt isn't, of course, in itself sectarian. I suppose the facts will come out in the trial.
I think if he is convicted of sectarian-motivated violence, as opposed to common-or-garden thuggery, then he would be a liability for a club, and that would have to be weighed in any decision to sign him.
