The smell of petrol probably speeded the whole process up. They were probably all high as kites when typing it.
this is a statement taken from the FAIs website.it speaks for itself,note the part where it says dundalk were at a meeting in which a playoff was decided upon.
1. The Independent Assessment Group was made up of Des Casey, Chairman; John Fitzgerald, former Dublin City Manager, Pat O’Neill, former Chair of the Irish Sports Council and Richard Collins, a director of Charlton Athletic Football Club. Des Casey is a former Vice President of UEFA.
2: All Eircom League clubs, including Dundalk Football Club, were fully briefed on what was going to happen at the end of the 2006 season. All clubs, including Dundalk, were aware that if they voted for the Eircom League to merge with the Football Association of Ireland that the normal system of promotion and relegation would not apply.
3: The Genesis Report on the Eircom League recommended that the League merge with the FAI ensure its future. A steering committee involving representatives of the Football Association of Ireland and the Eircom League was set up to explore the possibility of a merger between the two bodies and held its first meeting in September 2005.
4: The original proposal for the 2006 season was presented to the Eircom League clubs in January 2006. It did not envisage a play-off scenario at the end of the season. However, the clubs themselves and not the FAI decided that they wanted a play-off on the following basis. If the clubs subsequently voted for the Eircom League merger the play-off would be for ranking points. The minutes clearly show that Dundalk were in attendance at this meeting when the clubs decided to add a play-off game at the end of the regular season.
5: Dundalk have had an excellent season and great credit must be given to all involved, including their supporters. However, all clubs were aware that the outcome of the 2006 season would not solely decide the make-up of next season’s Premier Division. The performance of every club from 2002/03 to 2005 was included by agreement of all clubs in addition to the Independent Assessment Group’s measurement of each club against set criteria covering areas such as financial planning, strategic planning, marketing, youth development and infrastructure. While Dundalk scored excellent marks for the 2006 season and the off-the-field criteria they were hampered by poor on-the pitch results over the previous four seasons where they ranked 19th out of the 21 clubs.
6: At every stage in the process all clubs, including Dundalk, had the opportunity to suggest changes if they were not happy with the criteria being proposed and some clubs did so. In the end all the clubs that were assessed by the Independent Assessment Group had voted for the merger with the Football Association of Ireland and thus accepted the process that would ultimately decide the make-up of the Premier Division for 2007.
7: The system to merge with the FAI was set out months ago, the terms known to all clubs at that stage, and the clubs voted upon and agreed to the process as set out.
8: The Eircom League’s merger with the FAI banner will see the opportunity for real change in the coming years. Next year’s prize-fund has been increased tenfold to almost €1 million, with TV exposure increased to include 33 live Eircom League of Ireland games on television next year. A new Director, Fran Gavin, who was formerly with the PFAI, has been appointed. A total of 13 newly appointed National and Club Promotions Officers will be in place by the start of the 2007 season and their efforts will be supported a six-figure major marketing campaign.
The Football Association of Ireland hopes that Dundalk Football Club will build on the positives of the past few months as they have a lot to offer the Eircom League of Ireland.

Considering how controversial the topic is, and the stick they've been taking from many quarters on this issue, you really can't argue with a word they've said in there.
I wasn't aware that the clubs themselves had asked for the play-offs to be kept though !?!. Makes the FAI's position even stronger.
Dundalk havn't got a leg in light of that statement....

Poor John was left to gaze upon
His petrol-smothered balls.
So spare a thought this Christmastime
For one poor little boy,
The victim of a heinous crime,
A brutal, savage ploy.
