The 40% tax rebate scheme for professional sportsmen and women who have spent 10 years playing professionally, does that have to be continuous residency/earning in the Republic of Ireland?
It was in the news recently regarding Brian O'Driscolls new contract. Just wondering does it act as a disincentive to players to sign for Derry or is there special provison made for them in the scheme?
Clubs would have to be paying the tax continuosly 1st which would be a big problem for some clubs.
No, it's not a major problem for Derry as most footballers care only about the here and now and very few would be looking at that scheme.
It does hinder Derrys attractiveness for Irish players but the UK tax requirement to pay VAT on gate receipts has a worse impact on the club I would imagine.
Historically, as gufct has alluded to, the requirements around actually having paid tax on the full amount of earnings mean that very few players will benefit hugely although for some of the newer generation it could prove attractive.
The players don't care - hence the insistence on net pay contracts, and them never kicking up about the lack of wageslips, P60's and recieving various "expenses" as part of that nett pay. Obviously the clubs take the vast majority of the blame, but the players and their representatives are no angels in this and have been happy to play the same game. If they were thinking about the rebate scheme, they'd be making sure they were paying tax in the first place to be able to claim it back after the career has finished.
