Morley tip helps Derry to victory
Ex-Cork City striker Pat Morley may have unwittingly helped Derry City to a place in the Carlsberg sponsored FAI Cup final after the Candystripes defeated Cork 1-0 in the semi-final.
Derry City goalkeeper Alan Gough spoke with Morley, his former Shels colleague, before the game on Friday, enquiring about the identity of Cork’s penalty-taker.
Morley told Gough that top scorer John O’Flynn was the first choice taker, and that he usually shot low to the keeper’s right.
Inevitably, Cork were awarded a penalty and O’Flynn had the opportunity to add to the 13 goals he has scored in the Cup so far this season.
As Morley had predicted, he placed his spot kick low to the keeper’s right - where Gough got down and saved well.
The miss was all the more costly as a Sean Friars goal was enough to see Derry through to their first final appearance since 1997.
