Have these people no imagination?

Listened to John Delaney on Morning Ireland. Usual stuff welcoming the deal -- good for Irish football, etc. He was hardly going to say anything else, even though it finally nails his lunatic scheme to have Bohs groundshare with Shelbourne.
In case people didn't believe him, he says lots of English clubs, Man City, Arsenal etc., have moved to new stadiums further out in their cities.
This deal, if it happens, is seismic, and has the potential to transform the face of Irish football. But here we have the Premiership-obsessed head of the national football association still babbling about Maine Road. Is the FAI completely incapable of having a thought that doesn't relate to English football?
It doesn't bode well for their promotion of the league.

The man is obsessed with ManUre. Understandable as Shay Brennan, Euro CUP winner, lived with is parents for 6 months.

Sadly, it seems the answer to that is yes. It'd be interesting to know how many of the FAI top brass "support" english clubs.

The absolute worst was that FAI president who has anfield as the name of his house in mayo. Name escapes me though with a bit of luck his brakes will soon.

Yes Pat Quigley, who gave the legendary interview on RTE prior to the Carlsberg Cup tournament at Lansdowne featuring St Pat's, Liverpool, Leeds and Nazio. When asked who he wanted to win (hint... Pat's) he said that "as a Liverpool fan it wouldn't be fair to answer".

lads, get over yourselves. delaney can't be expected to avoid mentioning English football when it was the most readily appropriate comparison for the point he was making. i'm astonished that a bohs fan would concentrate on this supposed faux pas rather than the "seismic" deal that's just been concluded.

irish football fans are interested in english football (and scottish football, and champions league football, and rugby). to deny it is self-defeating doublethink, and it represents the sort of delusional, chip-on-the-shoulder pettiness that reminds me why i dislike the GAA...

Talking of abusing FAI officials though... a Galway United fan, reality TV star and Paddy Power employee who shall remain nameless once nearly had a run in with Quigley's mate, Michael Hyland. Hyland, who was League chairman at the time, was officiating at some league cup match in Belfield. The Galwegian walked into the "stadium" a bit late and launched into a solo rendition of "Michael Hyland you're a ******". If only he'd known there was a minute's silence taking place (hard to tell the difference at Belfield I guess!).

There is nothing delusional about hoping that a �65 deal is the start of a new era in football, when we finally shake off the monkey that everything here is defined by premiership football. This is not some GAA-like anti-Brit stance: it's wanting Irish football to grow up and to be discussed in and on its own terms, without the constant kneejerk comparisons to 'the mainland'.

Same Galway fan was at that game where you went berserk. But hyland was a complete ****wit anyway.

Nobodys denying that irish fans are intereseted in English football. You're missing the point, which is that John Delaney and his bastid ilk(I love that phrase:D ) are charged with running the game in THIS country. They are not just some ordinary man in the street. It's not too much to expect, surely, that they can actually show a genuine interest in clubs here(see Pat Quigley example above :rolleyes: ) and not constantly have to reference everything to the UK. I seem to remember Delaney also using the premiership as an example when he was talking about appointing an international manager, rather than just saying "club football" he had to say "Premiership club" . It's just very revealing of their mindset, that's all, and tells you something of why the game in this country has ended up in the state it's in. If it's petty to point this out, then so be it.

yeah I would not describe myself a Premiership hater but I always find it disturbing when Delaneys references the Premiership at every hands turn. Its not right for the guy in charge to be doing this.

Don't see what the problem is, it is relevant, as England is the nearest example of what happens when clubs do this. Can't believe he referenced Arsenal though; they moved about a mile away. :rolleyes:

Who on earth are you talking about?! :o

I don't remember this particular incident but I do remember chanting "You're not Patrick's anymore" during a minutes silence at some Pat's/Francis fans when we played them in Terryland once!

I also remember 'meeting' the aforementioned Hyland at a match in Terryland at a cup semi. :D
