I know there is a thread on this already, but what I want to know is this:

Would you like to see Ireland take a stronger stance vs Israeli shelling & Airstrikes?


I've been disguested myself that Bertie hasn't been more critical. I'm not saying that they should definitely push for an economic embargo on Israel but they should certainly have been making loud noises about it shortly after the Israelis started killing kids.

They can keep saying 'we didn't mean it', but every day they kill more civilians, and I certainly haven't heard them apologize for the civilian casualties yet.

If supermarkets were to put all the Israeli products in one corner so thatyou could see where they are I would certainly refuse to buy from it.

I'm not excusing the Lebanese / Hezbollah violence but if I saw families blown to pieces from artillery strikes and air strikes then I'd take up arms too -so they are increasing the support for Hezbollah. Israel's targeting of civilian infrastructure is a disgrace too.

After putting up the poll I had to think about this one a long time, but I eventually went for the first choice -Israel need to be told that the world does not accept the careless way in which they have inflicted civilian casualties and destroyed civilian infrastructure. They must act responsibly in war as well as peace.

Ireland should take a stronger stance on everything. Ahern's unwillingness to comment on any topic substantially makes us more Bush's poodle than Blair or anyone else, particularly given our economic power.

On the subject of polls, knock it on the head for a while now please. Mods are allowed to use them as a priviliege, but I don't want to see them overused.

Well we have arms dealers (TimTech par example) who supply them to fairly dodgy regimes.

TimTech build armoured vehicles, there's a bit of a difference between them and missiles.

Israels response has been OTT but lets not forget that innocent Israeli's have perished also.

How did this start, is all this stemming from the kidnapping of the Israeli soldiers and was it Israel who fired the first missiles??

Thats a bit of a simplistic approach, as if this is some new dispute that only began with the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers. This crisis in the middle east can only be looked at as being part of the wider crisis that has existed since the foundation of Israel as a state. Don't know if it has been mentioned on this thread but a good book to read on the subject is The Iron Wall by Avi Schlaim (not sure if I spelled that correctly) who is an Israeli historian but very balanced.

People should take it upon themselves to boycott zionist goods. You don't need the EU to say a thing (they'd start the usual oh those European anti-semites sh*te if they did anyway). Fruit, veg and herbs - why? I don't know when there are plenty producers not only within the EU but in former EU states' colonies - is the biggest source of Israeli goods in British shops to target. Sainsburys I've notices have nothing but Israeli herbs. Tesco's who are big in Ireland were founded by a wanted gerrymandering criminal's father that the Zionists have refused to send back to Britain, so wouldn't be surprised if they are the same. I've just avoided them (Chavsda on the other hand seems to have replaced ZOP coriander with home grown stuff the little nazis :eek: but their food is poor) but I think it's about time I registered some sort of protest with the manager of these stores that I want non zionist goods or else I'm going to avoid them.

Hezbollah are terrorists just like the 9/11 or London bombers so deserve no protection.

I believe however Israels response has been over the top & possibly guilty of deliberately targetting UN, journalists & civilians.

I do not think the term Zionist is appropriate here as is deliberately inflammatory.

I'm aware of the longer term history. I asked simply because the latest episode of violence seems to have escalated at an alarming rate. For a number of reasons I have seen very little TV for the last couple of months, therefore I am not 100% sure if the kidnapping was the spark for the latest spell of trouble.....

I agree, I'd be doing the same and am not aware that I have bought anything Israeli since the excaltion in violence but what disappoints me is that there is no political party ( like the Greens ) outside the Tescos of Ireland with Banners asking people ( making them aware of the possibility ) of not buying Israeli goods.

They have implemented sharia law in the de facto state of southern Lebanon. These are not the people to be given such weapons, just as much as their fruit cake, allah loving buddies in tehran.

would we allow missiles to be aimed on our sovereign territory? No we would not. This struggle is as much about values and way of life as it is religion. And I for one would be more open to the near-european outlook of the Jews in Israel, rather than arabs with their heads up their arses

Hezbollah are terrorists just like the 1916 IRA were terrorists, just like the ANC were terrorists. They are a resistance group brought into being by the most recent Israeli occupation of Lebanon.
