Paying Junior League Managers

Just a general question to get a survey of how many current Junior League Teams in the country pay their managers or re-imburse them in some way?
I think Westport united are going to go down this road shortly by getting a Mr. O'Connor (current Corrib Rangers manager) to coach the Junior Team.

What is the general consensus on paying coahes and do we think it is for the good of club football in all junior leagues?

What is the standard payment range or compensation?

I think travel expenses, communication expenses, and a base wage of around 450 euro a week are what I've heard being bandied about for this guy?

Like David Ginola once said: Am I worth it?

That sounds like alot of money, but most junior clubs in limerick pay their A team managers especially the top teams in town. Not as much as that but they do get something, Its only right, alot of work goes into it behind the scenes.

It would be detemined by the revenue that the club can generate, club house with a bar would help.

have to agree, its not as minutely straight forward as people think it is.
don't know if they should be getting a basic wage but definitely a monthly expense cheque should be forthcoming.
the phone bill alone for most mangers would be very big, it's not fair for managers to incurr this cost although im sure a lot do !

Don't know too much about it and have to admit I was taken aback as well with the amount. Maybe the total package costs that but as I am feeding off rumour I have to say I could be a mile off.

Seems like the trend is definitely there for people to get re-imbursed.

paying junior managers

i don't agree with it at all. managers should not be out of pocket. fone bills etc should be looked after but thats it. if they perform well enough with a junior team the may get noticed and move up to the paid ranks i.e. LOI. Therefore if they are good enough they will be sought out by LOI clubs if not.......tough. its the same for players.

if a manager is actually full time i.e. director of football at the club and puts in a full weeks work every week organising & administiring the whole structure fair enough but for managing the a team........no chance.

if u invest 450/week (that u'd waste on a manager) in an underage setup u'll get a lot better return in the long run and managers will be q ing up for free when the fruits of the underage set up prosper. e.g. Athenry

Gnasher, I also heard that it was 450 euro a week they were paying that man, along with petrol and phone. Again, that's just what people have been saying, rather than a definite figure. It seems a lot to me, but I suppose it's up to the club. Has anyone from Westport United got an opinion on any of this? It seems there was a couple of locals in for the job too, who have a history of involvement in United, but they evidently thought this guy was the man, despite the financial impositions. Time will tell I guess...

My tuppence worth

Sorry lads but i think paying managers can only hurt a club in the long term. Expenses are fine but how long before the players start to seek compensation for their on field efforts???? This is fine for pro or even semi pro but amateur clubs in general dont have the financial resources to sustain such a policy. There have been several clubs over the years pushed to the verge of bankruptcy by attempting to buy titles. it seems such harsh lessons may go unheeded if current trends continue. Paying managers or players devalues the trojan work- done volunteerily- by many a club stalwart. it can cause resentment and apathy towards a club. Lets leave pay for play (manager or players) to the professionals.

Have any players or managers in your own club EVER been paid any compensation for their efforts on the pitch, be it in a managerial postion or a players position ?:confused:

The managment team decided individually that they had brought it as far as they could and the whole town will be indebted to those guys forever. It's hard to have a full-time job, a family, and do at least three days a week with a team. Not to mention the effort it takes to bring a team to national prominence, that takes military type organization and it always falls at the managers to decide where the team stays, what they eat, when they train etc. The Club obviously supports this but I'd compare it to taking on a foreign student for the summer, except in this case its eighteen fellas! Gnasher reckons that even if the former group were approached about pay they would have turned it down (that is an assumption), it's not about that with most local teams managers/coaches. It's about the pride in your own team. Gnasher also reckons that the lure of better things will undoubtedly lead to teams chasing national and provincial honours paying coaches. The Gaa(h) have been at it for years, if you want to compete these days the set-up has to be semi-pro at the very least.

Sad but true. There will always be mercenaries and they'll always get paid.:eek:

Not to the best of my knowledge but i am open to correction. Not withstanding this i am still of the opinion that it is harmful to clubs.

what would the clubs revenue have to be to afford paying a manager �450?

not many junior clubs could afford this?
