MONAGHAN CELTIC UNDER 11’S travelled to Glenmuir Park on Saturday in the Shane Mc Guinness Cup with everyone thinking it was a foregone conclusion but the Managers and players knew
otherwise. The Lads knew this was their only chance even though they were playing the Top
team in the Premier Division and they gave it their all. Monaghan started very cautious
probably too cautious and Glenmuir were catching them with the long ball over the top. After
five minutes, from one of these balls, the keeper Ciaran Lynch came out to claim the
ball but sustained an injury and was unable to carry on. Conor Forde had to take over the Goalkeeper's jersey and Daniel Mc Carron came on to take over right of midfield. Glenmuir kept pushing forward and eventually broke down the Monaghan defence. This goal seemed to kick start Monaghan and they started to play more fluent football holding their own in most parts of the field. Both teams were playing some great football and Monaghan opened their scoring with a well worked ball through midfield which was nicely tucked away in the left corner by Fergal Mc Mahon score 1-1.
Glenmuir pushed hard and scored a second before halftime. Monaghan started the second half asleep and Glenmuir quickly crept in a third goal to make the score 3-1. This seem to kick start Monaghan again and they played some lovely football especially down the wings where Michael Galligan had an excellent game and scored Monaghan's second goal. It may have been
meant as a cross but did look spectacular! Monaghan's defence of B Harraghy, M Mc Carville,
K Murray and P Smyth defend very bravely throughout the game but unfortunately were caught
again by the long ball for Glenmuir's fourth goal. Monaghan did not despair and got their third goal.
Again the ball was worked down the wing by M Galligan and crossed in to Paul Byrne who finished with a magnificent strike into the top left hand corner. Both teams created more chances but our best
chance to equalise was from a free kick just outside the box from a handball but F Mc Mahon
could not keep it down and it went just over the post. The final score was 4-3 to Glenmuir. Glenmuir are a very strong Team and credit has to be given to Monaghan Celtic the way they handled themselves and put it up to Glenmuir well done lads. Man of the match who the referee made comment about went to Bryan Harraghy but in fairness they all could have got man of the match.

MONAGHAN UNITED’S UNDER 15’S moved into top spot of the Under 15 Premier League with a 5-1 win over Dundalk side St. Dominics on Saturday last. Paul Toal netted a hatrick with 3 well taken goals and a 25 yard volley from Dermot Malone together with a great individual goal from Ciaran Hughes completed Monaghan’s tally. United needed to win this game to give themselves a chance to take the league to the last game of the season.
United were up against it even before the start with 7 key players missing due to injury. Special thanks to Aaron McCarey, the Under 13 goalkeeper who stepped in to help us along with Under 14 players Mark Connolly and Dean McMahon. United started well and with 20 minutes gone, Paul Toal slotted the ball home under the Dominic’s keeper. Within 7 minutes Dominic’s were level but another 4 minutes later and Dermot Malone hit a 25 yard rocket of a volley into the left corner of the net to make it 2-1 to United at half time.
In the second half, 2 more very well taken goals from Paul Toal and a great solo run and excellently finished goal from Ciaran Hughes sealed the points for United. Aaron McCarey had a very good game in goals along with his defence team of Conor Finnegan, Liam McKenna, Vinny McKenna and Niall Flynn. It would be very hard to pick out a man of the match because every player on the team played their part in this very important win. With so many key players out, they all made a good account of themselves. Well done to all on the day. The date of the final game of the season is to be confirmed and we still have the ¼ final of the cup to look forward to. Training is on Wednesday night at 7pm. All players should be on time for training. Let’s make one last big effort!
