Monaghan Celtic Under 11’s hosted Muirhevnamor when they traveled to Gortakeegan on Saturday and Celtic knew that a win was essential to keep their League Title hopes alive.
Alas, it was not to be due to a few silly mistakes in defence and some
dodgy refereeing decisions. Monaghan Celtic got out of the blocks first
and looked the much better team and it was not long before we went ahead
with a great pass through from midfield to Fergal Mc Mahon. Fergal had
a great strike into the left corner to open the scoring. We got comfortable and Muirhevnamor
got back into the game and soon scored due to a silly mistake in defence.

Muirhevnamor kept pushing forward and went 2-1 up, this however wakened us
up and we took control again and were playing some lovely football which lead to our
second goal which was well taken by forward Paul Byrne. The game got fairly even both
teams playing well but Muirhevnamor got a free on the edge of the box which
resulted in their third goal. Monaghan Celtic, not to be out done, pushed
hard which resulted in a great goal from Conor Ford to make it 3-3 at half time.

Monaghan Celtic started the second half well but Muirhevnamor looked
dangerous on the break. Celtic stuck to the task and
eventually broke down the Muirhevnamor defence for Paul Byrne to
score his second of the game. We looked set for the win until some
decisions by the referee went against us. First Byran Harraghy was brought
down from behind at the edge of the box but play was allowed to continue for
simple tap in by Muirhevnamor and shortly afterwards goalkeeper Kieran Lynch
and the ball were pushed against the post and into the net in an obvious foul but
the goal was allowed to stand and our keeper had to substituted. Monaghan
pushed hard for the equalizer but ran out of time. Final score 5-4 for Muirhevnamor.

The lads played very well and unlucky not to get the result.

Monaghan United Under 12’s reached the last 8 of the SFAI National Cup with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Killeagh FC at Century Homes Park on Sunday last. This was a real team performance with every player working hard to overcome the physically bigger Tullamore side. Killeagh started brightly and dominated the early exchanges. Monaghan did well to hold the Offaly side, particularly from the threat of the “Twin Towers”. Once into their rhythm, with the ball at their feet, Monaghan’s class began to tell. United came close in the 20th minute when Seadh Deeny’s shot was tipped past the post by the Killeagh Keeper. Monaghan were awarded a penalty in the 25th minute after Shane McGuinness was brought down by the Killeagh centre-half back. Shane made no mistake with the resultant shot kick to leave the half time score at 1-0.
Killeagh fought hard and pushed forward after the re-start. The Monaghan back four of Niall Greenan, Thomas Kerr, James Clarke and Dylan McMahon were outstanding soaking up everything that was thrown at them. The midfield trio of Seadh Deeney, Conor Moynagh and Colin Clerkin worked hard all day tackling and creating chances for the forwards. Up front the pace and skill of Shane McGuinness, Shane Larkin and James McAllister caused problems throughout the match for the Killeagh defence. Shane McGuinness scored his second goal 12 minutes after the re-start when he headed home a super Shane Larkin cross. James Clarke secured the match with a left footed strike from the halfway line to lob the Killeagh keeper. Excellent performances all round. Keep up the good work lads!

Monaghan United Under 13’s also made it through to the quarter finals of the SFAI National Cup after a convincing 3-0 win over Premier Dublin side St Josephs. Monaghan, who were able to have all their players available for the first time this season got off to a dream start after only 5 minutes when Aaron McCarey drove a long ball to Cillian Coleman. Cillian controlled the ball well and then chipped it over the St Josephs defence to Phillip Donnolly who headed the ball over the keeper then ran round the keeper to finish in style. Monaghan were put on the back foot for about five minutes after scoring when St Josephs played some of their best football, but with this Monaghan defence of Campbell, McKenna, Dooney, McNally and McCarey conceding very little goals all season, it was always going to be tough for St Josephs.
Monaghan came close on a few occasions from Jack McCarron, Phillip Donnolly, and David Savage. Finally when we did breakthrough, James Clarke had a perfect goal disallowed for offside which even surprised the ST Joseph’s people and players.
It was 1-0 at half time and we were totally on top which was what the team needed. Monaghan brought on Cillian Clarke for James Clarke, as both of these players were playing in the next game for Seamus Deeney. Monaghan had another goal disallowed when Aaron McCarey once again found Shane Jackson with a long ball. Shane beat the keeper well only for it to be once again ruled offside. This was so disappointing for Shane who had one of his best games of the season.
This served to spur Monaghan on however and they finally got their reward when Cillian Coleman played a great ball through to Shane Jackson, who shot first time. The Josephs keeper could only parry away into the path of David Savage who finished it off well to put us 2-0 in front. WE had said before the game that David was due a goal and he came up trumps!
Monaghan were unlucky minutes later when Jack McCarron hit the crossbar from a 25 yard free kick. Monaghan seemed to go to sleep for a while after that and almost let Josephs through on a couple of occasions. Thanks to some great defending from Darren McKenna, Pete Dooney, Danny McNally and subs Brian McQuaid and Owen Coyle, Josephs failed to exploit the situation.
Monaghan finally made it 3 when substitute Daniel McKenna won the ball on the right wing and layed it off to Cillian Clarke who whipped an inch perfect ball in to Jack McCarron. Jack, who left his marker for dead, headed home at the near post. This crowned an outstanding performance from Jack, who had been missing for the past 4 weeks due to a broken wrist. It was also great to have Daniel McKenna back in the squad.
With 10 minutes left in game Monaghan brought on Ashley Hawthorne who almost set up Cillian Coleman for a good strike on goal.
The final score of 3-0 meant that Monaghan are through to the quarter-final of the National Cup for the second year running and we are due to meet Cherry Orchard or Lourdes who are both Premier Dublin sides. When we have all our players available, we are a match for anyone.

Naw dont think so....still counting the cost of our Silver Jubilee as a Club 2 years ago!

We will prob do something alrite but nothing major. Hope to launch our Youth Development Plan in the coming months if can get my juvenile managers to get their fingers out and contribute to it!

OOPs they are not "my" juvenile managers....just that have been chasing them so feel like I own them!

Monaghan Celtic Under 11’s travelled to Bay Celtic needing a win to boost confidence
after the disappointment of last week and the lads duly obliged. Monaghan started
a bit jittery taking them a while to settle on the ball, but when they did settle they took
control of the game and never looked back.

The first goal was scored by Kevin Loughran, who, after rounding a few players, stuck the ball in the corner of the net. Monaghan were dominating midfield which led to two further goals before half time scored by Fergal Mc Mahon and Conor Forde, who had a good game right of midfield.
With Monaghan in control it was a good chance to give everyone a good run out so there
was plenty of substitutions in the second half.

The second half was much the same as the first with Monaghan getting a lot of possession and they probably should have scored more than they did. Kevin Loughran opened the scoring in the second half just as he had done in the first with a well worked ball from midfield. There was good team play, which we need to keep doing if we are to win our remaining two matches. Paul Byrne scored the next after a few narrow misses and it is good to see both forwards scoring. The quality of ball coming into them was much better. To wrap up the scoring Kevin Loughran scored his hatrick and rounded off a good display by Monaghan Celtic. Final score 6-0 to Monaghan.

All the lads played very well and a number could have got man of the match but it went to Kevin Loughran for his hatrick.

Things are looking good for you in Monaghan with the underage football. Would you have the best underage structure in your league? The 3-0 win over Joey's is some result.

Well bar our Premier Under 11's (the team my son gets to stand on the sidelines for) all our teams are doing really well in their leagues and looks like they will be bringing home a few more cups this season. We may not be the best club in our league but we do have great development plans and are working on structures to make us the best in the country!

No mention of your Under-15's loss in the SFAI Cup then!?

JUVENILE JOTTINGS
St Dominic's traveled to Century Homes Park on Saturday and it turned out to be
a carbon copy of our first meeting with Dominics, a game of two very different halves. Monaghan dominated the first with the roles reversing in the second. Monaghan started off invincible taking control of the game from the off, the midfield of F Mc Mahon, M Mc Carville, M Galligan and C Forde playing superb and the defence of B Harraghy, B Smyth, K Murray and S Owens solid as a rock. As a result, we were creating plenty of chances but it took a while before we eventually scored from a ball well worked from midfield
that had Paul Byrne pushing it past the keeper.

Unfortunately with all the possession Monaghan
scored only once more in the first half again from the boot of Paul Byrne.

A few changes were forced on us at half time due to other commitments of two players and it seemed to turn the tide for St Dominics. We were struggling in midfield and defending very deep. As a result St Dominic's pushed forward continuously and scored three goals without reply and there possibly could have been more only for great goal keeping by Kieran Lynch. Monaghan Celtic made a few more changes and we knew we had to push forward to get anything out of this game. The last five minutes we improved and were rewarded with a great strike from Fergal Mc Mahon. The game ended 3 all which was probably a fair result. We have to work hard on our defence and our concentration during the game.

MONAGHAN UNITED UNDER 14’S
Monaghan United 6 - Walshestown 0.
The first game back after a long month break is always a worry. Monaghan United played some good football and gradually got into their stride of a passing game. Despite being the dominant team in the first half and with many chances coming their way, it wasn't until just before half time that Glen Calvert produced a classic finish to give the home side a deserved lead. Until that moment, Monaghan United were being frustrated with some very unlucky finishing and some cracking saves from the Walshestown keeper. Walshestown had a chance to go in even a half time but Kevin Martin in the United goal plucked the ball from just under the bar to leave United going in at half time one up.
The second half saw Monaghan United play with more fluency upping the tempo and trying to kill off the game. Good passing and good movement saw an accurate pass by Marty Hanley to Glen Calvert, who controlled the ball brilliantly with one touch, and with good control and a burst of pace he slotted the ball into the net past the on-rushing Walshestown 'keeper to make it 2-0 to the Mons.
A sweet move starting at the back by Paul Sherlock going through Conor O Gorman in midfield ended up on the right with Niall Hahassey who crossed for Glen Calvert to get his foot to and guide it to the net for his hat-trick. To be fair Walshestown never stopped trying, but on the day, they proved to be no match for the impressive Monaghan United side. Glen then scored one more after Niall Mc Keown did some great work inside the box to get himself free to make it four for Glen on the day and finish off the Walshestown challenge. Niall Mc Keown added to his own tally and scored the fifth when he never gave up his run to guide a Eugene Smyth pass past the keeper to the net. Charlie Mc Donald was unlucky with a shot when the keeper saved and Marty Hanley fired a cracker just inches over the bar, an exact replica of a shot that hit the bar in the first half.
The home side added their sixth of the afternoon within 5 minutes of the second half left. The Walshestown 'keeper kicked the ball out and the impressive Mark Connolly capped a fine performance when he rose highest in mid-field to head a pin-point pass to Kelvin Mc Entee who laid it to Berraat Turker who hit a half volley into the bottom right corner of the net. A cracking goal and his first for Monaghan United.
Kevin Martin in goal had very little to do in the match, helped by his back four of Paul Sherlock, Mark Connolly, Conor Toal and Dean Mc Mahon who were solid throughout the match. The midfield quartet of Niall Hahassey, Conor O Gorman, Marty Hanley and the much improving Conor Callan were outstanding and very impressive on the day and the front two of Glen Calvert and Niall Mc Keown who scored Five between them were both on their game. Kelvin Mc Entee, Eugene Smyth and Charlie Mc Donald showed the depth of quality in this squad when introduced, and Beraat Turker scored a scorcher as his first for United and James Conlon also did well on his debut.

JUVENILE JOTTINGS
Monaghan United Under 12’s produced a solid display to beat Bellurgan FC 4-0 at Century Homes Park on Sunday last playing a 4-2-1-3 formation United attacked from the off and pressurized the Bellurgan defence. A neat pass by Shane McGuinness from the left wing found James McAllister in the penalty box who tapped in to leave it 1-0 after 8 minutes. Bellurgan responded well however and their two centre half backs played exceptionally well to prevent the pacy United forward from scoring. On the 20th minute United were awarded a penalty and Niall Greenan made no mistake with his low drive inbto the lefet corner of the net. That was then yellow carded for his over exuberant celebration to commemorate the late great Celtic legend “Jinky” Johnstone.

The second half saw United play a controlled passing game. Shane Hannon made it 3-0 after his introduction as an impact substitute and always looked dangerous going forward. Monaghan’s defenc held solid with Adrian prunty playing particularly well at centre-half back. The midfield duo of Conor Moynagh and Cillian Clarke totally dominated their opposite numbers. Seadh Deeney secured the win on the 55th minute of play whenever he collected a kick-out from the Bellurgan keeper coolly beat his marker and shot and scored from outside the 18 yard box. All in all it was a good work out for the impending Quarter Final match on Sunday 26th March.
