Pat Fenlon played on both sides of the border back in the day, and politics was never a problem to the players.
They then moved on to Derry City playing in Windsor Park and the historic and political significance of it.
They had a political correspondant and Derry City fan (McCann??? something) maybe a Derry fan could provide his name. He started talking about how it will be great that Derry can be back playing in Windsor again and speculated on how many would travel. Said there would prob be very little chance of trouble but people will worry about going all the same.
He had a funny little story at the end of how football is a funny old game amongst supporters. While Daire O Brien jokingly asked "Could there be a day when Glentoran and Linfield fans will go to the Brandywell to cheer for Derry against Cork for example."
McCann said that a politician friend (can't remember his name) of his ran across the street in Belfast to shake his hand and wish him all the best against Linfield. Something along the lines of "I hope to God ye beat the blues on Monday night and put a stop to their run." His politician friend was a Unionist politition, but more importantly...a Glentoran fan.
It was a nice story and said a lot. It's not about your politics or your religion. Its about YOUR club.:ball:

Staunton knows that he will be given time to find his feet as a manager and so far a lot of the spin has been about how Kerr didn't pick the best young/granny talent available because he was under more pressure to perform well in friendlies. I expect Staunton to come out like McCarthy did early on and throw around plenty of first caps in the hope of unearthing a player with the natural talent to make the step-up to international level.
