Councillor sues FAI over lime burns
Dessie Larkin, the Independent Fianna Fail Chairman of Donegal County Council, has successfully sued the Football Association of Ireland for €9000 in damages for severe burns to his scrotum sustained during an FAI Junior Cup soccer match in 1993.
Mr Larkin was playing for Bonagee Celtic at Drumbar Football Club in Donegal in October 1993.
The pitch had been lined with lime and water just two hours before the game and the ground was without showering facilities – it is this that was central to the case, as Mr Larkin was unable to wash away fresh lime from inside his shorts after the game.
The following day, he woke up with his shorts stuck to his skin, and was later given morphine and a course of antibiotics and sent to hospital.
Judge Dearbhla Flanagan said: “Had he been in a position to shower and remove the lime solution, he might not have suffered the injury. The onus was on the defendants [i.e. the FAI] to ensure that players be warned to take precautions to prevent this.”
