City swoop for Irish youngster


Premiership high-fliers Manchester City have added to the Irish contingent at Eastlands by signing Republic of Ireland under-17 international midfielder Michael Daly from Dublin schoolboy club Cherry Orchard.

Castleknock native Daly started all three games as the Irish under-17 side booked a place in next spring’s Uefa second phase qualifiers in September.

What system?
The system (in Dublin and its environs) is that most talented kids play for the likes of Cherry Orchard, Belvedere, St Kevins etc. where they hope to be spotted by scouts for English clubs. This is changing to an extent, with the league clubs developing good underage set-ups, the league offering the opportunity to lpay full-time ,and at the same time English clubs are being much more selective about who they bring over (hopefully we've left behind the days of hundreds heading over at 15 with only a tiny fraction making it)

it's really up to the Eircom league club in the area to spot their own local talent and it's the fact that this isnt done that's allows such a situation. local talent should be indentified and integrated into a senior clubs underage set-up, if possible. although i would say in dublin that players like this would prefer to stay with their own youth club, such is the culture of thinking the eircom league isnt making it for a footballer, while be farmed across the water (and put on YTS) is thought of as making it. every young player should be shown examples such as kevin doyle. stay, develop, and if your good enough your chance will come.

From the catchment area for Sligo Rovers, clubs like Blackburn, Nottm Forest, Leeds, Bohs, St Pat's and even Belvadere and Stella Maris have noticed and taken players before Sligo Rovers noticed them. No point going on about developing local talent if the senior club in the area cannot spot them. Players moving from an area under the nose of a senior club is no longer an acceptable situation if clubs worth their salt want to develop and progress.

In the UK clubs are restricted to certian distance from their base are they not? Isn't this why say Manchester United can't snap u young kids from London. How can they just take kids from Ireland without any regulation...?

17 years old isn't too bad but should be bad on transfers of 16 years old & under.

You asked why didn't he go through the system. He did go through the system.

League clubs are sorting it out. Licensing means that they have to have schoolboy sections and league clubs (some at least) are investing a lot of time and effort in these. But it takes time, and with the English league on our doorstep, the best kids are always going to be attracted over there. PLus the top schoolboy sides offer top-class coaching, a higher standard of football and the chance to be 'spotted' (you might not think this is a good thing, but imagine if you're 15 years old).
Belvedere et al will still attract a lot of star-struck kids - face it, if you're 15 or 16 and given a choice between Manchester City or Longford Town, who are you going to pick?

I know ... but the system doesn't work in favour with Irish football, which is mad .... as Pete said ... whatever about 17, 16 and under is just crazy ... something needs to be done about this.

Serious about what ? rovers not noticing players . yeah that is all true i'm afraid. will be interesting to see if it happens again in this area in the future.

This situation were players are picked up before they get noticed or to an Eircom league club is down to the past attitude of the National League and the way it was run. For years the culture was and has been to bring players into clubs while ignoring local talent. Eircom league clubs would never have bothered with underage set-ups. So instead youth football clubs became the focus for scouts to find their next gem.

However i do expect the focus to change with club licensing etc. For regional clubs it can be difficult due to the lack of a competetive league that is good enough to develop players in.

But even if clubs do spot talent as monutd said attracting that talent to an eircom league side if there was an option to go across would be nigh on impossible.

In terms of the rule in the UK about distances that youngsters must live within from the club, i think the loophole in that is simply moving the player within the catchement area with a guardian and declaring that their residence.
