Gifts for toddlers (really interesting post, honest!)

i need a bit of help from you lot and any sort of (decent) input would be appreciated.
My nephews first birthday is coming up at the end of the month and i want to get him something good. Now im not the thoughtful shopper type so if you have any suggestions please post a reply im willing to spend upto 200 yoyo's but dont mind getting him something cheap either (its the thought that counts!!) so get cracking and help me out!
I want it to be THE toy that he'll remeber fondly when he's all grown up.

You could buy something big and crass, that takes loads of batteries, and makes some sort of constant repetitive noise. I'm sure his parents would really appreciate that.

Seriously, there's no reason in the world (the real world, that is) to spend two hundred euro on a toddler.
If you want to keep the parents sweet, get some clothes aswell as the toy.

A drum set. Nothing like the sound of loud boom-boom-splat early in the morning.

Children are too spoilt nowadays, they end up with too many toys and just fight over them. You are willing to spend 200 on a first birthday, you're mad. How about opening an account for him and putting some money in it for his future and buy a small gift.

Simple. No contest.

Get him as Scelextric! You'll get or em I mean em, he'll get hours of fun out of it! Honest.

My 1 1/2 yo son got a drum kit from his uncle. It's not half as bad as annoying noisy battery operated toys, as he actually has to play them to make noise, as opposed to flicking a switch.
There's always the added satisfaction that he's playing a musical instrument at a young age, albeit to a Meg White level of competence (j/k).

For my wee neice's first birthday I had a star named after her !

You get a framed certificate giving the astronomical grid reference of the star and its new name ('Zara Keeley Vowden'), a map of the solar system, a book about stars, and some other bits and bobs as well, all in a boxed-pack.

The certificate hangs above her cot, and the idea is that once she gets to an age where I can hold a vaguely sensible conversation with her (i.e. the menopause...) I can take her out into the garden at night (steady...), point at any aul' aeroplane circling round the Manchester skyline, and tell her that that's her star - named after her !

The one slight dampener is that it is isn't actually an official naming, as the astronomical people are po-faced ballaxes who won't play along and who take the naming of stars very, very seriously indeed (yawn...). Like - there's only a couple of billion of them.....!

Anyhoo - an interesting way of getting round the problem of having to choose something for what is effectively a human amoeba. Has great longevity to it as well....

Music is very important in a young childs life. He will get a whole lot of enjoyment when he discovers the sounds he can make by himself.

Plus you can also use the drums at footie matches!
