i thought it was 2 automatically promoted and 3rd place has a play-off with 3rd from bottom in premier.
but another post i just read implies that it is 1 automatically promoted and 2nd place play 2nd from bottom in the premier...

The latter. One automatic spot and a play-off.
Originally it was planned to admit first and second to the Premier Division (no play-offs) but since Premier clubs outnumber First Division clubs 12-10 this was unsurprisingly voted down.
Oh oh...I thought it was the former - the promotion race has hotted up 500% in my head...
