Keano in retaliation shocker!

Roy's been at it again. Reminds me of MacAteer's hand gestures to him when they had a run-in during Sunderland-United a couple of years ago... :rolleyes:

Roy Keane was ushered off the pitch at St Mary's after the Manchester United star responded to barracking from Southampton fans by mocking their relegation plight.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder was warming down after being an unused substitute for the Red Devils' 2-1 victory over the Saints, which helped condemn them to relegation from the Barclays Premiership.

Saints fans jeered Keane, who then responded to the abusive chanting by pointing down and waving goodbye.

He was quickly escorted down the tunnel by stewards and away from a 500-strong group of fans who had been calling for the resignation of Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe.

Apparently they started chanting "arsenal, arsenal" at him. Pointless blaming Keane for their plight though, they'd be better advised to give their defence a chant or two.

Silly to lower himself to it though, he'll probably get in trouble.

I love the attitude of some supporters they give tonnes of abuse and then when they get a little bit of it back they run to the police or whatever it may be. A simple gesture of putting his thumb down or waving goodbye is mild compared to what a lot of players do.

Well I didn't hear anyone chant anything at him, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few did chant "Arsenal" at him. Just the same as we chanted "USA" after the Man Utd fans started taunting us about going down.

Hardly tantamount to "tonnes of abuse" though, is it?

No southampton fan really cared what keane gestured, them going to the police is judt another way of them having a pop at him... Fair play to them...

I would have done the same. Its ok for a fan to give a thumbs down gesture to other fans and players so I don't see why a player should be punished for doing it. Afterall, we're all human.

I'm not sure with which part of that sentence Roy Keane would take most issue, the fact that you've called him obnoxious, a langer, or accused him of being from Togher.

Probably the last bit. To call Roy Keane a southsider would probably bring out the worst in him.

And now Paddy Vieira's having a go at him.

"Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira has accused Manchester United counterpart Roy Keane of abandoning his country before the 2002 World Cup in retaliation to comments reportedly made by Keane this season.

Vieira has also pre-empted summer speculation about his future by insisting he will remain a Gunner for the remaining two years of his contract.

The duo, who will come face to face in Saturday's FA Cup final, clashed minutes before the Barclays Premiership match between the two sides on February 1 when Keane had to be restrained as the teams waited to enter the pitch.

United won 4-2 and Vieira made no comment about the incident but today in The Guardian the Frenchman has spoken out.

Keane reportedly criticised Vieira's decision to play for France despite being born in Senegal during the pre-match confrontation. The Irishman's comments appear to relate to Vieira's charity work in his African homeland.

After the match, veteran Keane claimed Vieira had been targeting Gary Neville for abuse minutes before the game. And more than three months later, Vieira said: "I will not say I intimidated [Neville], I would say I tried to make a point. He [Keane] reacted the way I would react if somebody came to talk to one of the Arsenal players - that's what I would expect.

"It did not surprise me at all, it was a captain's, a leader's reaction. I have big respect for him and all the Manchester United players, no doubt about it."

The confrontation which followed reportedly saw Keane ask his nemesis why he did not play for Senegal if he was so fond of the country of his birth.

Vieira, capped 79 times, has now retaliated by highlighting Keane's bust-up with Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy ahead of the 2002 World Cup, when the player returned from Asia.

"For someone who leaves his team in the World Cup, I think he should keep this kind of remark to himself," said Vieira.

"He [Keane] does not know my background and I do not want him to make a comment like that because he is not in a good position to say something like that. He walked away from his national team when they really needed him."

Following the match, Keane expanded on his opinions regarding Vieira's affection for Senegal.

"It makes me laugh, players going on about how they are saving this country and saving that country, but when they have the opportunity to play... well, it's probably none of my business."

Vieira responded in Tuesday's Guardian: "I have nothing to prove to him, I have nothing to prove to him. He is not from Senegal, he is not from Africa, he will not understand. So it is better for him to look after himself and what he's doing.

"Even saying what I have just said does not take away the respect I have for him as a player. When I came to England he was the one I was looking forward to playing against because he is the best in the business in his position. I have big respect for him.""

I know it's just childish pre-Cup Final carry on, but he does have a point. When I heard Keano's comments before the Arsenal game (and perhaps my being a Gunner has something to do with it... ;) ), it smacked of hypocrisy, given how Saipan is still (and probably forever will be) in recent memory. But apart from that, and like Paddy Vieira (where the similarities end :p ), I have the greatest respect for him otherwise.

it seems to me that the only people who talk of a keane demise are the media. hearing what viera had to say today, what gerrard said earlier in the season, and what many others have said, keane is still one of the most talented midfielders in the premiership, i don't believe he's a waning force, in fact i believe hes got better this season than the last couple and discipline has a lot to do with it

I totally agree with you there. The media like make a mountain out of a mole hill. To be honest I doubt Keane could stand by his comments that he made about Viera. I think they were the remarks of someone who was wound up and you people tend to say things in the heat of the moment that they might later regret.

Did it take Viera this long to come up with a response? Probably too scared to say anything back in the tunnel, considering he went missing for 90 minutes.... :D

Personally thought it was a pretty funny gesture. Reminds me of Jose Mourinho v. Liverpool, which was also great. Don't dish it if you can't take it.
