Maybe not a day, but I think it would be right to have the time off during his funeral. I fundamentally disagreed with 3 things about this Pope, but I do believe that on the whole he has done a lot of good, was loud and strong in his opposition to all wars and was a strong moral compass for people.
I would believe that he has had a major impact on this country and the whole world, and, whether you agree with him or not, a man of his stature should be afforded huge respect.
Bertie was quick to have a day's mourning for the twin tower's attack, a ridiculous decision in my opinion, so a national closedown for a few hours is more than in order.
I would say yes, but to make sure it acutally counts and people dont just use it as a day off to hit the pubs or what ever else it may be, have it on a Sunday !
today FM ran one this morning and something like 96% of voters wanted one
Pubs would be closed.... Day of mourning and all..Quote:

I think 96% of people would have voted for the day off, I'm not sure there'd be much actual mourning done.
Having said that, there are people who the pope meant an awful lot to, and for that reason they may wish to pay their respects and offer a prayer, for that reason I think Patsh's suggestion that anybody who wishes it can take time off for the funeral should be offered.
Didn't somebody get banned the other day for asking this same question.
Hear hear. I think a lot (not all) of people are just looking for a free day off. Having it on a Sunday would prevent a lot of this. If people want the time off when the funeral is going ahead, they could take it off themselves, just like any other funeral.Quote:

To make Sunday the day of mourning is just a way of keeping ISME happy, and if economics is going to start to dictate, which is sad, then there should be no official day of mourning.
I'm sure most practicing catholics will mark the passing of the pope in their own way next Sunday, so why make the publicans "suffer".
Personally I would like to see Friday as a day of mourning.
I don't see the point to be honest. Religion is a personla matter & people can choose to grieve or not as they see fit. I don't see why country should basically close down just for those people who lets face it would be in the minority. People always vote for day of work & would just treat as any other public holiday by going to pub or shopping centre.
Last time we had this with 9/11 was criticised afterthefact & i was "asked" to work anyway.
AH WELL
it's not going to happen anyway

There's a difference between a "day of mourning" and a "day off". And that wasn't why they were banned anyway, it was because they continued to be disrespectful after having been warned to stfu.Quote:

They're talking about a days mourning in Italy, where flags will be at half mast, cabinet is suspended, and a three minute silence.
We could have done something like that, instead of ruling it out straight away because it wasn't economically viable. That wouldn't effect people that much, and those that want to, can show a mark of respect.
heard on the radio that Bertie has give all civil servants the ability to apply for the day off on friday to mourn the death of our Pope and he was advising the rest of the companies in Ireland to follow suit..
Typical Bertie move. Doesn't actually make a decision & bumps it over to others.Quote:

Schools also have the option of closing and will not be made to make up the day at the end of termQuote:
