Keely for Dublin City

Very surprised to hear that Dermot Keely has been offered the temporary job at CHF.

It just goes to show how in-bred football management is in Ireland. Here's some of the merry-go-round we've had this year :

DERRY CITY : Stephen Kenny, formerly of Longford and Bohs. Gavin Dykes, formerly of Finn Harps and, I believe, Sligo Rovers.
DUBLIN CITY : Roddy Collins, formerly of Bohemians. Dermot Keely, formerly of Derry City, Shamrock Rovers, Finn Harps and Kildare County.
SHAMROCK ROVERS : Roddy Collins, formerly of Bohemians and Dublin City.
DROGHEDA UTD : Paul Doolin, formerly of UCD.
FINN HARPS : Felix Healy, formerly of Derry City.
CORK CITY : Pat Dolan, formerly of St Pats.

Seems the only teams in the Premier who haven't bottom-fed off of managers from other clubs are Shels and Waterford, who've grown their own (not sure where Alan Matthews of Longford came from though, or St Pat's background...).

I'm not saying there aren't a few good managers in the list above. Dolan, Kenny and Doolin stand-out. But surely domestic football in Ireland could do with a few new heads to bring a fresh perspective to the game, rather than just re-shuffle the same cards a couple of times a year........

Keely has eleven odd clubs to his name, actually derry was his 11th. DC is his 12th.

Matthews was assistant to Keely at Shels and assistant to Lawlor at LTFC.

Johnny McD at St. Pats was an assistant manager at DC(maybe Shels) before taking over at Pat's.

In fairness, the jury is out on Kenny. No doubt a success at LTFC but at the upper table, fair to say he's still unproven to a large extent...

What about Bohs and Farrelly?

He managed us for a short period apparently.

UCD was his first back in '83, but he got sacked after eight games after falling out with Doc O'Neill - wanted to get rid of Theo Dunne. Silly silly!

Left us to go to Rovers, had a spell with Sligo as well.

The Ballad of Big, Bad Dermo
[color=black]He was tall and he was moody, and magnificent and mean,
He was the toughest critter that the West had ever seen,
A voice like Bonnie Tyler’s and a chin encased in stubble,
When Dermo’s horse rode into town, you knew that there’d be trouble.

He’d ride into a one-horse town and tether up his horse,
His language was atrocious, it was blasphemous and coarse,

And a kid would run and warn the undertaker and the priest.

He’d get the marshal’s star and he’d affix it to his chest,
Nobody dared to argue for they knew he was the best,

Dermo would size up the worth of every willing male,
Some he made his deputies and some he stuck in jail,
And some he woke up in the night and rode them out of town,
Whilst those who tried to challenge him, he brutally shot down.

From Shamrock in the east, he rode to Sligo in the west,
The townsfolk down in Longford all were mightily impressed,
He travelled through the borderlands, Dundalk and Donegal,
Equally as happy in a gunfight or a brawl.

Back down to lawless Athlone where his presence caused alarm,
And then we thought he’d settled for retirement on the Farm,
But Dermo wasn’t happy tending cattle, field and hedge,
He missed the taste of danger and the living on the edge.

He met with Dirty Ollie and they galloped on their horses,
Into the town of Tolka, where they summoned up their forces,
They made the people prosperous, and brought them wealth and fame,
Though people thought that Dermo had been too long at the game.

But when they woke one morning, bad ol’ Dermo wasn’t there,
He’d packed up his belongings and was heading for Kildare,
He built a little wooden shack and planned to till the earth,
And oversee the rising of a settlement from birth.

But after only fifteen months of scratching at the soil,
Dermo’s back grew weary of the unrelenting toil,
Last seen, his horse was heading for the dreary northern skies,
His soul is filled with restlessness, no matter how he tries.

And so he’ll keep on wandering from one town to the next,
A tortured soul with hollowed eyes and countenance so vexed,
Until one day he’ll meet his match, inevitably he must,
And the dogs will lick his body as it lies there in the dust.

You probably need to follow the Eircom League to understand this one. Its about Dermot Keely, legendary Irish manager of a million clubs over here!!

He also managed Dundalk to the league title in 1995.
Dermot never managed the West of Irelands biggest club.
I have a feeling he may have managed Bray in the mid '80s.

I agree with that, EL sides need to look at out of work managers abroad such as John Aldridge or Ronnie Whelan to bring un, going through the same managers over and over again and we'll never progress. Lets face it, the majority of them are average at best anyway.

Dermot Keely was appointed Player/manager of UCD in 1983.
He was transferred to Shamrock Rovers in November 1983.
He succeeded Jim McLoughlin at Shamrock Rovers in 1986 as manager while continuing his playing career and stayed with the Hoops to 1988.
He was then player/coach of Home Farm for the 1988/89 season.
He then moved to Sligo Rovers where he stayed the start of their 1992/93 campaign. He then had a brief spell with Longford Town before moving to Dundalk. There followed the succession of clubs which included Athlone Town and Finn Harps before Home Farm Everton. He then had spells with Shelbourne and a very brief spell at Derry City .

And I think that is about it until Derry
