Colm Keaveney joins Fianna Fáil

Well, the thread title says it all!

The ex Labour Chairman, ex-Independent TD has now found a home in the bosom of Fianna Fáil. And proving what a titan among men he is, he can find it in his heart to acknowledge that FF has learned from its mistakes of the past. Oh, that I had a modicum of his vision and magananimity!

Nothing like the fear of being squeezed out in a three-seater in the next general election to concentrate the mind, eh, Colm?

It's one thing switching between broadly similar parties, but it takes a special kind of individual to jump the ideological spectrum on the basis of throwing a wobbly.

Breathtakingly cynical stuff.

I think Colm Keaveney’s tweet announcing his membership of Fianna Fáil should have read Favet fors et insolentes; Fortune favours the brass-necked.

How a man who stood in the Dáil and so virulently attacked a party over a period of time and then joins that party is beyond my comprehension. That it’s Fianna Fáil even more so.

Some of the commentary yesterday from the media, most notably Shane Coleman on Newstalk seemed to give the impression that this was a black-eye for Labour.
This is merely an act of desperation from a politician who got too big for his boots and now has nowhere to turn, with his seat in Galway East no longer a safe one and with European Parliament Elections a few months away. He has to keep the show on the road ya know.

As someone who was in a position of some authority within The Labour Party, he was well aware of what sort of budgetary measures that may have had to be taken in 2012. His decision to vote against the budget as a member of a government party showed such arrogance that you have to wonder about his primary motivation at all for being a politician.

The vox-pops from around Tuam yesterday seemed to indicate that Deputy Keaveney was a man of principle who stood up for what he believed in. This shows a complete disconnect from the reality of the situation by his constituents. And lucky for him.

Yesterday just served to remind us of the hypocrisy of Deputy Keaveney.

In previous exchanges in the Dáil and on Twitter he has consistently attacked Fianna Fáil and their ties to allegedly corrupt individuals. It seems that time is the great healer in this case and that Deputy Keaveney’s willingness to let Fianna Fáil away with this is an example of his fortitude as a politician.

Outside of the hypocrisy of this move, which was well flagged when the story initially broke; there has been a lack of coverage of Deputy Keaveney’s stance on the X-Case legislation and in fact his attitude towards terminations themselves.

You see, it seemed that when he was a member of Tuam Town Council he was pro-choice and yet the reasoning he gave behind voting against the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill was that there was no time-limit as to when a termination could occur (which was the reddest of herrings set forth by the pro-life lobby).

The dichotomy of these two stances serves to show that he is pro-”whatever you’re having yourself”. A perfect fit for the Fianna Fáil way of doing politics.
That they now have in their ranks another conservative politician whose primary motivation for being a TD is just to be a TD sits very cosily with the pervasive attitude of the party.

The statement by Deputy Keaveney is that “Fianna Fáil are a different party, a changed party… the best way I can fulfil the commitments I made to the people of Galway East is to join a party like Fianna Fáil. It is a party that has shown an understanding of the mistakes of the past.”

The best way to fulfil his commitment is to resign his seat and let his constituents decide.

Ireland 2013, you couldn’t make it up.
