I am also looking to find out the format the Presidents Cup took.
I have us appearing in a knock-out competition in 1969/70-1972/73, but straight into two-legged Finals in 1981/82 against Dundalk, and 1983/84 against Bohs.

Only just spotted this thread. The President's Cup is/was an LFA competition, so Leinster clubs only. It started out (in the 30s) as a knockout competition for the senior clubs in Leinster. From the mid 30s on it was usually played just as a one-off, but sometimes involved all the senior (League of Ireland) clubs. Usually in the 60s up to 72-3 it involved all the senior clubs. Since 73-4 (from my limited records) it seems to have been just a one off, but it's not been played at all a couple of times recently. Generally it's league champions v FAI Cup winners if both are from Leinster but obviously there has to be some flexibility if trophies go beyond the pale, somebody does the double, a club can't be arsed, etc.
Thanks Sean, that clears things up. Us as League Champions against Cup Winners Dundalk in 81/82, and Bohs (beaten Cup finalists against Sligo) in 83/84.
As it happens, our first game back in the LOI in 69/70 was in this comp, winning away to Drumcondra.
Pats last played in it in November 1998 (as league winners) against Shels (runners up in league and cup)).
Pats involved in these finals (winner first)
1952/53 St Patrick's Athletic Dundalk
1953/54 St Patrick's Athletic Shelbourne
1955/56 St Patrick's Athletic Shamrock Rovers
1956/57 Shamrock Rovers St Patrick's Athletic
1959/60 Shamrock Rovers St Patrick's Athletic
1961/62 Drumcondra St Patrick's Athletic
1969/70 Shamrock Rovers St Patrick's Athletic
1971/72 St Patrick's Athletic Bohemians
1974/75 Bohemians St Patrick's Athletic
1980/81 Dundalk St Patrick's Athletic
1988/89 Dundalk St Patrick's Athletic
1990/91 St Patrick's Athletic Bray Wanderers
1996/97 St Patrick's Athletic Shelbourne
1998/99 Shelbourne St Patrick's Athletic
We weren't involved after that despite winning the league in 1999 so that may have been the last effort.
I know we played in 1964/65 and didn't reach the final so that's at least one year it existed!
I remember there was a some cup competition where the final was played on St Stephen's day at Dalymount, maybe that was the President's cup? I think the pubs in Dublin city were shut on that day.
I went once to it as a kid (late 1960's), the place felt packed, about 20,000 in attendance.
Where did it all begin go wrong?
I blame the telly....
The Leinster Senior Cup final was traditionally played on St Stephen's Day
There were at least three finals played since 1998, I think the last one was Shelbourne 2-0 Dundalk in September 2002.
I got a copy of the LFA 100 Years book recently, and it lists all the finalists from the first cup in 1929/30 up to the 92/93 season.
since 92-3 I'm aware of these finals, there were others I believe
93-4 Shels 3-2 Bohs
94-5 Bohs 2-1 Rovers
95-6 Shels 2-1 Dundalk
96-7 Pats by Shels
98-9 Shels bt Pats
02-3 Shels 2-0 Dundalk
Bohs beat Shels 1-0 in 97-98, and on penalties in 00-01 and 01-02.
Apparently the FAI have said there will be a President's Cup game to kickoff the season with Pats playing Sligo in March
Anybody any details?

That's a terrific idea. Presumably it will end once he leaves office.
I believe it was the same, yes. Think the last one was around the turn of the century?
Em, read the thread lads....
Here's a list of LFA President's Cup final results plus lots of history and stats on it.
