Dundalk (friendly)

Decent effort from the Youths tonight as they went down to a late goal from the home side in Oriel. Youths travelled with only twelve and started with Graham, Clarkey, Gary, Jamie, Jimmy, Rocks, Glenn, Brian, Caolan, Deano and with Graham up front. The only sub was Joey. Dundalk started the better without creating too much and after fifteen, the ref brandished a nothing yellow card to Byrne for Dundalk. After twenty, a good move sent the Dundalk left-winger free down his wing and his shot from the angle of the box beat Graham who got a hand to it and looked as if he should have done better. 1-0 to the home side.

After 28, another good move by Dundalk resulted in a cross from their left and Graham did well to push a free header away one-handed to keep the score at 1-0. With the half-hour gone, Youths got back on level terms with their first decent chance when Deano got a good effort away which Cherrie parried away poorly to leave Rocks with a relatively simple rebound for 1-1. Glenn then had a decent effort which he put just wide and Dundalk had a break-away which finished in a looping effort which Graham just touched to get it over the bar for 1-1 at half-time. Dundalk the better side up to half-time but Wexford industrious and with Deano doing reasonably well down one wing and Clarkey doing well on the overlap on the right.

Wexford actually competed better in the second half as the number of subs grew for Dundalk. However, the first sub was Wexford's after eight minutes when Joey came on for Graham. After fifteen, Joey shot over for the Youths and, two later, Graham had to get down quickly at the near post to deny Dundalk. With twenty gone, Dundalk had a free header from a corner which was put tamely over. With 24 gone, Youths lost the ball in their own half but the effort hit the outside of the post and wide with Graham beaten. Then, with fifteen to go, the only real moment of quality in the second 45, when a good cross from the right found a Dundalk attacker in the clear and his header gave Graham no chance for 2-1 to Dundalk. Wexford tried hard to get the equaliser but only created one half-chance from a free for 2-1 to Dundalk at the end. Glenn also picked up a late yellow for a tackle.

Best for Wexford were probably Jamie and Deano while Clarkey got forward at every opportunity even though his usage wasn't always the best. Graham was very industrious up front and, with Tom not having featured to date, it looks as if Graham will be the starting forward for the Youths this year. Major weakness for the Youths was the quality of the crossing which resulted again and again in floated balls onto the six yard line which Cherrie could have collected in his sleep. Dundalk's strongest area seemed to be the middle of midfield but they don't look the biggest side in the world. 2-1 to Dundalk at full-time.

Think players were just given the night off since we played a St.Johnstone XI on Monday (missed the ferry home that night too!) and Limerick on Wednesday. We were also supposed to play Bray tomorrow, its off now, Rovers on Wednesday and Shels next Friday. That would of been six games in twelve days, which would be a lot for an amateur team

But maybe players are carrying injuries. I don't know!
