I currently have my broadband with Eircom, it's up to 8 Mb/s advertised. I know I'm never going to get that 8, but what should I be expecting to get? I'm getting around 3.2 Mb/s at the moment anytime I check it, morning or evening. What sort of speeds are everyone else getting?
The gf has eircom and is supposed to get up to 8mb/s also but is lucky to get over 2mb/s.
With Smart Telecom myself, getting around 10/11 mb/s on a 24mb line.
I'm not far from the town centre though so it's to be expected.
The parents are with Eircom though, about 3 miles outside of Letterkenny, on an 8mb line they get about 2.5mb/s on a good day.
It's actually painful having to use their internet when I'm home.
I'm with UPC. Eircom are ****ehawks.

Have any of the irish providers hinted if they have any plans at bringing out fibre optic broadband?

Last time I had checked 30mb was the basic. I must have been upgraded again so. When I first signed up it was 15, then upgraded to 20, a few months later upgraded to 25mb and the most recent was upgraded to 30. They must have upgraded it again. Just ran a test there. @daithi, if you're getting that speed fairly consistently and you have everything hooked up correctly at home, including your filters, then the problem is likely to be either the distance from your exchange, or a dodgy line. If you're more than a few clicks from your exchange then your only option is to upgrade to the 24MB product if it's available, of which you'll get 10-15MB at most; or move to another source (cable or wireless), again if available. If you're quite close to your exchange then you should file a complaint with Eircom about it. They may or may not do anything about it, but it's probably worth a shot, and you probably have a better chance of getting it fixed than if you were with another DSL provider.
