Shelbourne Documentary from 1975

'In My Book, You Should Be Ahead'. Documentary about Shelbourne from 1975, on the RTE player. Fascinating stuff. Everybody worried about falling attendances in 1975 too. Also, a trip to Cork Celtic's absolute tip of a ground. (Presumably Turners' Cross before it was revamped). Plus, heavy drinking (and resultant drunken behaviour) amongst supporters and officials, and a visit to Shelbourne's derelict former stadium in Ringsend. This was particularly interesting - I knew nothing about this old ground. Looked quite big.

I quite enjoyed that. Where was the old stadium in Ringsend? Was it on Sean Moore Road across from the The Irish Glass Bottle Company site?

Yeah, halfway between the Bottle company and Ringsend park, on Bremen road, it's an athletics venue now, They do that Tag Rugby lark there aswell.

Really enjoyable. It is amazing that you can take every arguement from it and bring it to today's game.

Class. Brings back a load of memories.

At that stage we'd had about 6 years of the rivalry between MOTD (on BBC) & The Big Match (ITV) (for me that was where the drop in interest in our league stemmed from) and the attendances had dropped off as more & more watched the English games on TV instead. Then for the next few years Dublin were on top in the GAA & the LOI became history.

The old boys in the pub were great.

Came across this last night and it was excellent but couldn't believe the irony in it. They were chatting from the very start about the downturn in attendances from the outset and at one point one of the Shelbourne officials, it may have been the manager, was watching the vidiprinter and the results from over here and he was saying there was too much football across the water affecting the League of Ireland. Amazing to hear that converstaion and here the same conversation almost 40 years later.

Weren't there Shelbourne officials in Clarkes in the middle of the scuffling. The main character who was right in the middle against the bar was very edgy anyhow and was getting irritated. I thought he had a Shelbourne tie on him.

I'd love to see more old programmes like this. The team talks left a lot to be desired. Anyone else think so?

Absolute gem of a programme, fully encapsulates LOI, and as other posters have said will bring back many memories for todays LOI aficionados
