Waterford

Very lack-lustre performance from the Youths in Waterford tonight as they went down to a very heavy defeat to a home side who comfortably deserved to take all three points. With CJ passed fit, Wexford started with the same eleven as against Limerick with Graham, Brian, Jamie, CJ, Jimmy, Aidan, Craig, Shane D., Deano, Danny and Tom. Wexford in fact started reasonably well and, in the first minute, Deano had a shot saved by Packie in the WAterford goal after a long free-kick reached him. AFter four, Darragh Walsh had a shot grabbed at the second attempt by Graham in the Wexford goal. After seven, Aidan Keenan got a shot away which was saved low down by Packie. Remarkably, this was to be the end of Wexford's reasonable attempts on goal as they fell away thereafter.

Just after the quarter-hour mark, Waterford went ahead when the excellent Sean Maguire won the ball in the Youth's own third, beat a YOuth's defender and drilled a shot low right from just outside the box for a 1-0 lead for the Blues. However, Wexford persisted in taking too much out of the ball for the remainder of the match and probably misplaced or failed to control about 50% of any passes throughout the match thus coughing up easy possession again and again to Waterford. After 25, Shane D. picked up a yellow for two tackles in quick succession and, with ten to go, Darragh Walsh headed just over the Youth's crossbar when well-placed. With five to go, a low cross from the left reached Darragh Walsh in the box who turned nicely and flicked it neatly into the far corner to Graham no chance for 2-0 to the home side. Just on the blow, Craig picked up a yellow for a tackle for 2-0 at half-time.

Unfortunately, while Wexford were poor in the first half, they were even worse in the second and looked like they could have played for a week without scoring. WIth two minutes gone, Jimmy picked up a yellow for kicking the ball away. With ten gone, Waterford got their third when Sean Maguire stabbed home a corner which surprisingly reached the far poat after travelling at no more than head height which was very similar to the goal conceded against Limerick last week. With twelve gone, Phelan picked up a yellow for Waterford for a tackle on Brian Nolan. Game was pretty dire thereafter with the Youths creatng little other than giving the ball away and, with twenty to go, Patsy and Shane Nolan came on for Tom Elmes and Danny, which was more than a bit of a surprise. With fifteen to go, Frost picked up a yellow for a tackle and just after, Maguire blasted a header for Waoterford straight off the crossbar and then Youths had to clear a dangerous cross off the goal-line for a corner. With eight to go, Darragh flashed a shot just wide and three minutes later, a run down the left by Waterford and a cross found Phelan in the clear and he stabbed it past Graham for 4-0. Last action of the match was another tackle by Shane Dempsey which earned him a second yellow and an early trip to the dressing-rooms.

Wexford were very poor on the night and I'm sure they'll learn that, if they don't play to their strengths - a high tempo game with early release to an aggressive forward-line and Danny picking up the pieces - they can be very ordinary indeed. Best for the home side were a very impressive Sean Maguire, who got a standing ovation when he came off with ten to go, Darragh who is still very young and needs to work on his potential, and ex-Youth Peter White who locked up midfield for the Blues alongside Gary Dempsey. 4-0 to the home side at full-time.

Was at that game, was fairly desperate for you alright. Bit of a slow puncture starting following on from last weeks game against us?

Interesting weekend for you if you're heading for Ballybofey as well!

Defeat of that magnitude will probably bring a more realistic perspective to the next few matches. I thought we tried to be far too elaborate last night and attempted to pass through a Waterford side which were always going to put in a better shift after the defeat in Ferrycarrig. Shane might need to think of a few changes for our next match against SD Galway. Wexford aren't good enough to take anyone for granted in our league.

Have to agree with you Forza terrible performance last night and it appeared like we forget the basic's trying to many little flicks and 35 yard passes instead of a simple pass. Hard to single anyone out for praise but also hard to blame one person for the reusult as all where quiet poor. Also very disappointed to see that the back chat to ref and other officials has not stopped.

I was indeed in Ballybofey also! Twas a bad, bad night for ye Friday alright. That said, in common with everybody else bar the Galway pair there's no reason not to aspire to third. I felt you were a bit too open early on against Waterford when, in my admitedly limited exposure to you this year, your strengths appeared to be defensive. Was surprised to see you shipping four even if the first two (and in particular the second) were very good strikes. Good luck with the next few games anyway.
