The Football Association of Ireland today (September 28) announced Bus Éireann, Ireland’s national coach and bus service, as title sponsor of the Women’s National League. Bus Éireann are delighted to be involved and support this new development in Women’s Football, and through this title sponsorship look forward to being involved in the growth of the Women’s National League in the long term.

Since the launch of the FAI’s Women’s Development Plan in 2006, the numbers of registered female players have doubled, coaching standards have improved nationwide, international rankings have increased at all age levels, a comprehensive emerging talent programme has been rolled out, and there are currently 31 women’s leagues operating throughout the country. The Women’s National League is a cornerstone in the Women’s Development plan, and aims to nurture and develop talent to a whole new level

Nice spin for the average reader in the daily star.BUT the question is with all the hush hush at local level how will it be good for the womens game. With league teams being formed as club teams .
1. how many teams will be broken up to form 1 leag team.
2. all underage players will not be considered for the national team unless they play for a national league team.SO there is no reason for local clubs to continue to be successful because it will not be rewarded.

But you have to allow players have a platform where they can progress to the highest level of their ability. Its unfair to block them ..... Whats is your solution to that issue?

It ain't what you do its the way that you do it ...................

This needed to be done but god knows at what cost. Leading up to this there was a list of criteria offer to clubs interested in joining
Some were
a max of two clubs from Dublin
Having a viable underage girls section with a quality coaching structure in place
An U17 Girls team this season was compulsory
amongst others

Wilton were not accepted for whatever reason even though they met most if not all of the criteria, even though some clubs haven't met the criteria and the planned number of participants had not been reached - 8
That Wilton team and prob club will prob be obliterated now with the Cork team cherry picking from them and others.
No doubt all the teams will be cherry picking the best of talent around them around them not a lot can be done about that. Although there are rules in place to stop a club taking more than 3 players from any one club, plus with some of the leagues not finished by end of September and the transfer window closing end september also the National league teams may not be able to plunder as they might want to.

This new league is a necessity but if not done correctly wont last long. Clubs like Wilton being cast aside for clubs that dont even have a Ladies/Girls section is a recipe for disaster.

You could be right there but it will all settle down as soon as its up and running a year or two, then you'll see more teams being added and the more the merrier at that stage.

Its disappointing that Bray/Joeys have pulled out at this late stage... Perhaps if it was done earlier and it might have allowed another Club to put in place the organisation/players etc to enter a team. Lets hope that the things that happened in the Dutch League dont happen here.. interesting articles...

Don't think anyone bothered to ask any of the clubs outside of dublin how it might work.Now we will have the so called platform for greatness ;but with so many players being signed up for national league teams with full squads a lot of players will not even get a game.but they can,t return to the club where they play every week and developed their skills.PLUS word is the 3 player rule will be amended so it will be open season on players.

Besides this forum does anyone actually talk about the start up of the national league. Can;t find a start date; fixtures for it or anywhere its being promoted .Cork and limerick league sites dont.t mention it .Clubs don.t mention it.THE ONLY place you hear of it is from players telling other players they have moved clubs and its usually away from the league that they play in.SO will somebody please inform the powers that be its time to put some time into THE WOMENS NATIONAL LEAGUE.

Hi LmkSnr.

The official launch is on tomorrow in Aviva Stadium. Bit of background to tide you over......

League begins on 13 November and runs through to early April including League Cup competition. Though how it will work now that Bray/Joeys have withdrawn is anyone's guess.

Main League sponsor is Bus Eireann.

Champions will qualify to play in the qualifying competition for the UEFA Womens Champions League.

No limit to number of players a club can sign.

All games played on Sundays at 14:00

There is supposed to be a dedicated website launched this week - till then prob better checking websites of the clubs in I'm sure some of them will cover it
Although some of the clubs aren't even doing that!

OK now its up and running.But where do we get the questions answered.How do all the clubs involved in playing the beautiful game all over the country find out how it effects them.Start date 13th nov how long does it run for.When can a player leave the league if its not for them.What happens the senior cup are all these national league teams allowed into it .Big question . There is no limit to the amount of players a team can sign BUT IS THERE A LIMIT TO THE AMOUNT A TEAM CAN SIGN FROM ANY ONE CLUB. questions questions. HOPE all clubs will be sent the proper details so as not to ruin something that is needed but not railroaded in

How would it effect clubs all over the country? Apart from the obvious that some clubs have be ruined and have had their players taken - this years WFAI finalist have been obliterated along with Joeys
other than that how will it effect others?

Runs untill end of April with the next season starting earlier next year.
This is nothing new football is football seasons winter/summer are outlined in the rules
Transfer period is dec/jan - any unhappy players can leave then, may need to be regraded to play outside Nat Lge, bigger issue will be the Nat Lge clubs signing players that played summer football, the summer season end at the end of Nov, any player that took part in summer football would require a transfer to play in the Nat Lge or wait till Dec could be quite a few players sitting out the first few games.

There is a limit of 3 that you can transfer from any one club without hassle after that you require written consent to sign subsequent players, as above transferring from other clubs could prove quite a sticky point

Who needs to be sent info? Nat Lge clubs? if so most of them have been involved in the LOI before
and this is nothing new, all rules are ultimately from FAI rule book - why complicate it.

Agree completely that this has been railroaded while definitely required. Catherine's and Joeys have lost a large amount of players to Nat Lge along with Wilton and prob more clubs seems to be too much politics around some of the teams that were chosen.

Can't agree here......Catherines never declared an interest in playing in Natl Lge. and Joeys were in it and pulled out(haven't heard why as yet...anyone know?)

As for Wilton, I do agree that they have been shafted as they actually declared an interest and applied to play. I was personally surprised they weren't given a licence. The fact that there is a Cork Lge team almost guarantees that there will be no other teams from Cork in any future Natl Lge.(unless the Cork Lge team pulls out). The same goes for Wexford. Any inclusion of Lge Representative teams restricts the clubs under that Lge's Banner to continuing to play under that Lge as I can't imagine a Lge agreeing to a club within their structure rising to play Natl Lge.

Lots of respect for Castlebar Celtic as the only Club from outside Dublin in the league.

No time for Shamrock Rovers who have not had a women's team for about 6/7 years and I cannot understand how they got a licence as there has been no interest there to have a women's team over that period.......some nodding and winking there I think?

It looks like people within the womens game at grass roots are starting to wake up to the fact that there efforts over the past few years stands for very little.The national league more or less hands the womens game over to most of the league of ireland clubs who really do not have any interest in womens soccer but need it as a reguirement for there own license's.The current league teams that were supported by the clubs within each league [ wexord cork and limerick leagues] have now been handed over to these league of ireland clubs with out any consultation with all the clubs involved in each league no meetings or votes.

The FAI Club Licensing Manual for 2011 dont state that...

The licence applicant should have an adult women’s team and at least one underage girls team. The underage girl’s team can cover any age up to under 16.
Its graded at criteria C... “BEST PRACTICE”: C-criteria are best practice recommendations. Non-fulfilment of any C-criteria does not lead to any sanction or to the refusal of the licence. Certain C-criteria may become “MUST” criteria at a later stage.

On a side note, last time I checked, not many women teams have the proper infrastructure that is required for National League.. so at least the LOI Clubs have these facilities.
You should really have a look at the FAI Club Licensing Manual and indeed the requirements set out for the Womens Nat League.
Its clear to see that people want the new league to fail... Look at the LOI, 3 Clubs in Galway not sustainable, a Galway League team with the best players in a team makes so much sense, every single "Junior Club" can still survive.. People failing to see the bigger picture.. Its about the overall game with the proper and correct structures not all about "your club, my Club".. Quit the cribbing and moaning, its going to be a fantastic league for the 6 teams involved. They should be applauded for their efforts.

Agree Catherine's never tried to enter the Nat Lge - but should they be punished for that. Participants in the DWSL from Sen down for the last decade and more have now lost vast majority of their first team

Wilton also - did the Cork League even have a senior team this year?

And agree completely on Rovers - once you've a stadium the rest doesn't seem to matter

While some might not have their own they could quite easily get access to the required facilities sure any of the Dublin clubs could apply to use the public facility in Tallaght?

I dont think people want this league to fail I believe people want things done right and as you say in your example 3 clubs in Galway are not sustainable the same is true of more than 2 clubs in Dublin in this Nat Lge, this has been proven already with Joey's folding before the league starts.
Its about the bigger picture? In other words the little people dont matter?

It is about the correct and proper structures - there have been several clubs in the last decade or so that have dominated the DWSL Prem and WFAI Cup most were one hit wonders lasting a few seasons UCD/Francis/Rovers - where were they this year? all gone because they just cared about senior and hadn't a proper underage structure. - Francis were the closest to having an underage structure but had too few teams to last.
The Nat Lge prob came a year or 2 too early for Joey's an excellent underage set up but poor at Senior
Cork - their future will depend on how the clubs there react next AGM could see the end of them as there is a lot of hostility to how the have set this up
Castlebar - dont know a whole lot about them but the only team in Connaught could see them succeed, travel will be expensive and take its toll maybe
Wexford - are the Wexford Yth's or League ? Like Castlebar no rivals in the region do they have underage teams?
Raheny - Currently one of the top teams in the country good underage structure
Peamount - as Raheny one of the top teams and very good underage
Rovers - Unknown entity as no recent involvement in game, looking at the metropolitan girls league no underage teams how long will they last if they struggle in first?

Quit the cribbing and moaning? If it was done right then none involved would be afraid of critics

It just seems to be one thing after another the latest seems to be the eligibility of players signed from other clubs,apparently and amazingly the clubs including 4 clubs with National league experience/League selections failed to transfer the players they required before the end of September to have them eligible for first three games. But that will be someone else's fault also!
