CORK CITY goalkeeper Noel Mooney has vowed to fight tooth and nail to hold onto the No 1 shirt at the club.
Mooney was demoted to second choice net-minder with the Leesiders after the arrival of Michael Devine from Waterford United last season.
But Mooney made a rare first-team appearance last Monday in the League Cup win over Cobh Ramblers and was retained for the visit to Oriel Park yesterday where Cork beat Dundalk 3-1.
And after getting a taste of the action again the 24-year-old is desperate to extend his run in the side.
He said: "Needless to say I was thrilled to play against Cobh and the fact I managed to keep a clean sheet was a bonus.
"When you are a keeper all you want to do is make sure the opposition doesn’t score and that is what I did.
"I think that helped our manager Liam Murphy to make up his mind to keep me in the team for the Dundalk game and while I was disappointed to let in a late goal, generally I was pleased with how the game went for me.
"It hasn’t been easy coming in after spending so much time out of the team but hopefully now that I am back I will be able to get a little run going.
"I would be lying if I said I didn’t mind having to watch Michael playing so much but we get on very well together even though we are both battling to play. But the final say is with Liam and it is fingers crossed that he will stick with me for the next game at least."
Cork’s win over Dundalk lifted them into third place in the Premier Division and Mooney sees no reason why they can’t push even further up the table.
He added: "We have quite a useful squad now and after a shaky start to the League we have done quite well lately.
"There isn’t all that much between the top sides and I think we can more than hold our own against any of them. Certainly we can do even better over the coming months and hopefully finish higher up."
