Right here's the dealeo I bought a car recently. It's a navy blue golf but I'm thinking of changing the colour of it so I'm just wondering if any of ye have experience of doing it. I don't even know if it's possible but I imagine it is as the boy racers seem to change the colour of their car as often as there baseball caps.

It's expensive to do right, since the car will need to be stripped back to a bare shell to get the engine bay, exposed interior panels, etc. Also, if you intend reselling it at some point, you'll be lowering the value since the colour won't match the logbook.
If it was a classic or prestige car it might be worth it, but a navy blue golf? Unless it's a Mk1 - and even then I'd question it - you'd be better off selling it and buying one in the colour you want.

It's possible though, to change the stated colour on the log book, I did a few years back.
