It was held to mark 150 of Brazil's independence from Portugal (I think).
We were in a group with Portugal, Chile, Iran and Ecuador. We beat Iran and Ecuador but then lost our next 2 games finishing 3rd in the group. Poertugal went on to lose the final to the hosts. We played up in Recife and Natal in Northern Brazil.
Those wins were our first for quite a while.

Thanks partner, I wish we were invited to something like this again. Would be great experience for the squad.
A lot of controversy at the time because Chile was being ruled in 1972 by a Military Dictatorship. And the Chile football stadium was being used as an open prison by the Junta. I can remember Giles being interviewed about playing Chile. RTE's football coverage (both Radio and TV)at that time was woeful. Thye did eventually show some very brief highlights of the Chile about a week after the game took place. From a football perspective these Games kick started the Giles era. We had reached an all time low in the 71 European Qualifyer away to Austria (Tuohy was in charge)6-0 to the Austrian's. Then Giles came in and the optimism grew. And that South American tour eventually led to the 3-0 against Russia at Dalymount IMO. We looked and played like a real international team and not the previous shambles of the 70/71 years
I dont think so elroy , mostly smaller 4 or 8 team events like the Nike cup etc ..
Liam Tuohy was in charge for this competition in Chile. Giles took over in 1973. I don't think Ireland had won a game between 1967 and 1972 when a Tuohy managed side beat France 2-1 in Dalymount. The 6-0 defeat to Austria featured a team of 10 LOI players plus Paddy Mulligan, I think.
Your right YoungIrish. The old memory failing me.
Just been digging into some matches and came across this tournament for no reason really. Apparently Ireland played against Jose Mourinho's dad in goal, unfortunately nobody scored on him.
Some more information on this tournament that I came across.

I've had a go at updating our squad list on the wiki. Not sure if I got it right. Can't tell for sure if Holmes and Fairclough played. (It would seem they did by rsssf.com but not by http://eu-football.info/_match.php?id=11871.)
