Monaghan United 0-3 UCD

Anyone got a match report seeing as how I couldn't make it up? Podgo scored twice, Robbie Mac scored one and missed a late penalty, while Monaghan had two players sent off as well.

According to the eleven-a-side preview, Willie Doyle was doubtful with the concussion picked up last week, which could have seen McWalter up front and Brian Newguy on the right. If so, it seems to prove the general feeling about McWalter - good up front (three goals in a game and a half there now), but we need a more out-and-out wide man on the right.

There was a report in yesterdays Star and Independent.
I didn't catch the name of the Woman referee. And as I know all three of the women on the Eircom League panel that is something. She got left off the team panels in the Star.

Headline was "Students Win Points Race" which I thought was pretty good for a tabloid !

Ok altogether now join in

Re: Concussion

The conventional wisdom on the condition is that players should not return to action for at least 14 days after sustaining one. That means Willie Doyle could return for the trip to play Kildare next Saturday.

Ben Savage is injured at he moment, as far as I know.

The ref was Hilda McDermott.

Hilda 's father used to ref in the League at one stage.
She's not a bad ref at all ! ;)

Bloody McWalter. I reckon he just did this to annoy me. :D

Are we better off with him on the bench, coming on fresh up front, or on the right, moving up front when Gannon comes on for a striker?

Probably the best College/Students related headline yet, not that that's saying much.

As for McWalter, I don't think he can start up front ahead of Doyle or Robbie Martin and I think Gannon is a better winger who I reckon isn't starting because of inexperience and nothing more. So bench pushing for a place up front.

In fairness, at least our forward line has more strength in depth than we thought two games ago!

Didn't we sign an Owen Kerins from Waterford in close-season, or am I making it up?

Monaghan game

This was a very scrappy game. A lot of hoofing. Had Monaghan scored first, it might have been a different result. UCD tried to play but it was difficult against a physical Monaghan.
The defence was fairly solid. There were a few scares, including when Gallagher spilled one from a free from just outside the box in the second half (when the score was 2 0). It came off his chest and the rebound was hit against the post and then against the upper side of the bar. Apart from this, he played well and had a few good saves and his distribution was generally good. He's gaining confidence.
I think this was Ally Mahon's first full game back, he might have wished for a less physical one, as he had to go into a few tackles, but he came out ok from them. Sully is injured, out for a few weeks.
Brian Gannon started very well, he was very tricky, but took a terrible tackle from Kelly, who got a straight red, which was justified, in my view. That slowed Gannon but he kept at it and he had the shot that got the penalty, although it might have been going over the bar. The ref, yes it was Hilda McDermot, did not see the hand ball, she consulted the lino, who was a man (the other lino was a woman and for her it was also a tough game). McAuley blasted the penalty, too close to the goalie, but who did well to stop it. It was not the usual slick McAuley penalties I've seen before, which he has placed.
McAuley took the second goal well, a free kind of looping header from a corner on the right by Finn. Padge did a lot of running and took his goals very well, sliding them both past the keeper. He could have had one or two more. Tony Mc took a bad fall and damaged his knee. He could be out for a few weeks.
Hilda generally did well, but it was a tough game for her, with Monaghan very physical. They were really annoyed with her and Mick Cooke gave her guff after the game, as well as to his players in the dressing room. He's signed 14 new players for this season (most from Dublin, some ex-Dundalk), so no look in for the locals. Ben Savage got injured in a pre-season game (badly bruised ribs) but hopes to be ready for action soon.

That's two bad tackles in two games on him now, a lot of thugs in this division!

So Tony Mac and Sully are injured, looking at the team from Friday, that'll mean Mahon at right-back, McNally in midfield and Kenna at centre-back. When is Doyle likely to be back does anyone know?

That's what I would probably do as I said in some other thread but in one of the match reports linked above, the team shows Kenna replacing Tony when he went off. Presumably that means that Kenna went in at centre-back with McNally pushing up to midfield. I'd assume that Pete Mahon would go for the same from the start against Kildare after trying it against Monaghan.

No, when Tony Mc came off, Kenna went to mid-field and McNally stayed at centre-half.

apparently kenna went into the middle of the park in a straight swap for tony mc, burke was an un used sub, doesn't seem like pete rates him at the mo. would assume that kenna would play middle again on sat nite.

Fair enough, I didn't know Kenna could play in midfield. I've only seen him in defence this season. How'd he do?
