The Football Association of Ireland today (May 4) opened applications for the position of Republic of Ireland U21 Head Coach to replace Don Givens. Applications for the position will close on May 21.
Candidates will be expected to have a UEFA Pro coaching licence and proven coaching experience. The successful candidate will report to Wim Koevermans, the FAI’s International High Performance Director.

Job Title: National Under 21 Head Coach
Reporting To: International Performance Director
Jobs Reporting into the Job Holder : U21 Backroom Team
The position of National U21 Head Coach is a crucial one for the long term success of the Republic of Ireland Senior Team by providing the Senior Team with a pool of talented Irish players with experience of playing international football which is different from being in a club environment and playing club opposition. The objective of the U21 National team is qualification for UEFA tournaments as a minimum in order to give young talent that high pressure tournament practice alongside providing continuity between the U19s and the Senior team for Irish players.
The National U21 Head Coach will enhance and influence the development of young Irish international footballers and ensure a seamless transition from the Youth Teams to the Senior Team whilst contributing to the overall National Team Strategy and individual player development objectives.
In addition, the National U21 Head Coach will play a vital role in the education of elite coaches through the Coach Education programme and in-service (CPD) training.
Key Responsibilities
TEAM PERFORMANCE:
The sourcing, recruitment, selection and retention of players.
The physical and psychological conditioning of individual players and teams.
The organisation and execution of team training sessions
The formulation and implementation of playing strategies and tactics
The management of team and individual player performance
The scouting & analysis of opposition teams
Assist in the development of a suitable programme of friendly matches meeting both the playing needs of the team and the resource needs of the Association.
PLANNING and ORGANISING
Compliance with all relevant national, international governing body policies and procedures (including liasing with clubs holding the registrations of players selected for international representative duties)
PEOPLE MANAGEMENT
Relationship management between the players and between the players and the Association.
Oversee the development and implementation of a team/player code of conduct addressing travel, media, commercial, disciplinary areas and all other associated areas.
The supervision of player recreation and behaviour, to an acceptable standard, while on international representative duties
The supervision and performance management of the Association technical staff including sub-contractors, in line with the criteria set out by the International Performance Director
Advise on the selection of technical staff in conjunction with the International Performance Director
DEVELOPMENT
Develop shared objectives and strategies in conjunction with the underage youth teams to ensure the development and availability of a pool of quality players to facilitate current and future success.
Keep updated on relevant best practices in relation to a team management and technical training, formally share knowledge and best practices with youth underage team managers and other relevant Association personnel.
Participate in media activities to the benefit of the Association as required.
OTHER:
In addition to the above the Head Coach shall also be responsible for such other administrative, organisational, management, commercial, media, technical duties as may be reasonably required by the Association from time to time to deliver the objectives of the position.
Key Skills and Experiences Required
UEFA Pro Coaching Licence
Track record in coaching at club level and experience in international football
Sensitive to the development needs of talented players
Broad based knowledge of technical developments from around the football world
Excellent communication skills
