we all know he has had his problems away from the mic but back in the hayday of radio dublin he would occasionally fill in for someone on an odd sunday morning.what a boring voice ,same tone whatever he was talkiing

well it depends on if your talking about radio or pub/club dj's....if you were talkin about radio i'd say gareth o'callaghan....bored me to tears, he was even too boring for radio 1.
if you were talkin about pub/club dj's i just say anyone who doesn't talk and interact with the crowd, some one who just plays the tunes and puts no effort into getting the atmosphere going.....
If you're talking about dance dj's, the whole point of the club dj is NOT to get on the mike! When you go to see a dance dj, you're going to see a performance of mixing and seamless track selections, not someone ruining the atmosphere with a cheesy dj voice. There's nothing worse than a club dj talking on the mic.Quote:

To be honest I much rather a "cheesy" dj who might be entertaining and a bit of a laugh over a a dj who'll play the tunes with a serious face and keep his mouth shut.
I think to be a good dj you've got to have a certain degree of stage presence.
Anyway, most boring.... Martina (Redfm), John Clarke (does the the sunday morning oldies on 2fm) and a lot of the guys on 96fm.

recently the herald did a great stunt, they got a doorman and advertised that he was a major dutch trance dj and arranged a gig in dublin...he turned up with a case fo tunes and they played a pre mixed cd ( doen by a computer program) guess what no one noticed and he was asked for his autograph after the gig.....
mixing eh ??? a pc can do that, its a skill but no what being a dj is about...its the music that you play...
as for your cheese comment.....cheese is big....r n b is a specilised as dance, i know a lot of people who only do r n b gigs and its killed dance because the females like it and the lads follow the ladies..
the major dance dj's all started out playing at 21st etc, thats where you learn your trade..

That really sounds as if you just made it up .... and if you didn't, the paper that did it isn't very creditable to be honest.
For me ..... it has to be seamless mixing, style, recognisible character and signature. Music engineering at its best.
Cheesey DJ's go straight to room 101 along with the Clickity Click weather man on TV3. Cheesey sucks to be honest. I tolerate it because thats what most places serve along with as many pints they can get down your gullet. Turn up the cheese and down go the pints and roll 'em out at the end of the night, the suckers will be back again next week !! :rolleyes:
i didn't make it up, its true and sad to think that the punters didn't even notice....
i love playing my rock and would play it all night but the majority rules so i play "cheese" and with a few beers and the right people you can have a great night...if you want to be really cool and listen for that perfect mix bring your own discman and a cd....sorry to say it but the music that is played is much more important then if its mixed...its entertainment not a competition...
btw what is cheese to you, is it r n b or kylie or 70's or 80's or a mixture of all of it...
if you don't like the music the dj plays don't go there...or ask him why he is playing what he is...the truth is the management often set the limit on what is played...no dance or no oldies etc...
at the end of the day i'm in it for the money and i'll play what i'm asked to by the management cause they pay my wages..you'll say the punters pay my wages.which is true...but they don't do the hiring and firing,i'm in this business 11 years and at this stage i've seen most situtions and can tell you dance is dead ( which i'm not happy about) and the future is urban (which i'm not happy about)...

i've been flown to vages, london, ibiza, stockholm amd madrid to play...i've been invited to new zeland and australia in october to play....i've played in front of 27,000 people in Ireland at a gig.....i've worked for rte, today fm, fm 104 to mention a few.....and guess what all from a talentless cheeseball dj.......
i think i'll give up because every tune isn't mixed.......

No offence, but what a load of toss! Firstly, dance music was never mainstream to begin with, it has always been an underground genre. Granted, it enjoyed a few years of mainstream exposure over here when the big UK clubs came over and threw festivals (Creamfields, Homelands etc). It also reached a peak when hard house was popular through Dj's like Mark Kavanagh, and also through John Power, Mr. Spring etc. However, it was never ever as big here as it is in the UK and mainstream europe. I can tell you my friend that the dance scene is still as vibrant as ever - the only difference now is that its more underground and less s*hit is being played (i.e. hard house). You have to go looking for your good nights, but they're there. If you're in the know, you'll know where to go, simple as that.Quote:

Furthermore, I spent the summer living in Ibiza. Dance music is far from dead. DJ Tiesto, a dutch trance dj, recently played live for 8 hours to 80,000 people in the Vitesse football stadium in Holland. It was a world record crowd for a single dj, and its being repeated in the near future. Also, UK club Godskitchen is to hold its first major outdoor festival, 'Global Gathering', in Ireland next August. In Limerick, my local dance record store is currently developing an e-commerce website, and will become Irelands first on-line record store in the next few weeks (www.mynted.com). Carl Cox and Paul Van Dyk just played in the Redbox in Dublin. Van Dyk plys there again on May 28th, Tiesto plays Spirit in October. These are the biggest Dj's in the world. Dance music is dead alright......:rolleyes:
What REALLY f*ucked it up in this country is the licensing laws. Promoters could no longer give value for money to punters because dj's cost too much, thus the scene collapsed. I've been a promoter myself, I know the score.
Secondly, on the herald thing, i don't believe it for a second. Big Dutch trance dj's do not appear out of nowhere - if they're popular, you'll know all about them. An educated dance fan would not fall for something like that. The only way this story could be vaguely true is if the night in question was held in some dinky club in Dublin, whereby the crowd was probably 14 - 17 year old scumbags pilled up to their tonsils on yokes, a common occurence in the dublin scene.
This shows that you really don't know anything about dance music or dance music culture. A pc? Who the f*uck wan'ts to listen to a pc?! Can a pc scratch? Can a pc manipulate sounds using an effects unit? Can a pc cut and paste in and out of tunes? Can a pc smile at a crowd and jump up & down and egg the crowd on? If you have a pc that can do any of these things, join a circus bud, you'll make a packet! Because any dance music fan that I know pays to see a dj's performance, not an automated one or some tool in the corner talking over the music. Carl Cox or a pc? Tough choice there alright.Quote:

More rubbish. R'n'B might have killed it for the mainstream crowd that follow fads, and will dance to anything at the drop of a hat after a few pints. But if you knew what you were talking aout, you'd know that R'n'B is the bane of the dance music fan - its right up there in the s*hit stakes with westlife and pop idol etc.Quote:

In any case, being the great dj that you make yourself out to be, yoo should know that any music fan or dj that appreciates and is serious about their music, doesn't just change their tastes cos the ladies do! What a laugh! Fad followers do though, and this is what you're referring to here, not serious dance music fans. I have yet to meet one dance music fan who has upped sticks and turned his back on the scene because the ladies like R'n'B! :p
A few do, but the majority do not. Dance dj's are not rent boys. They have a passion for their music, don't collect or buy cheesy pop and are quiet particular about what they play. For instance, you'll get a dj who only plays deep house and will not, under no circumstances, play anything else. Not even funky house or progressive house, which would still be house, never mind pop music!Quote:

What has that got to do with anything? playing in front of people isn't a talent! Its what you do technically that counts. If i go out and play in front of 27,000 football fans tomorrow, does that mean i'm talanted?! Just because I play, because I have the balls to play in front of so many people? Rubbish. Its what you do that counts. The simple fact of the matter is that dj's like you are limited to tune selection and talking to the crowd. You have no technical talent whatsoever, and don't say that you do. You don't mix and don't know the next thing about the art of djing (properly). I'm sorry, but a turntablist easilty p*isses all over cheesy dj's every time. Put the two in front of a crowd and its no contest. Its been often said that a cheesy dj with a mixer & two decks is the same as giving a deaf man a hi-fi system - he can fiddle with the knobs but he'll never know how to use the thing properly!
Anyone CAN do that job. I do dj myself, but only at private parties, college parties etc. I play Tech House, Techno and Trance. There is no point in playing pop music for me because it defeats the purpose of being a dj - mixing, scratching and eq-ing.Quote:

I don't have the foggiest about the technical side of it but I'm not sure it's fair to say anybody can be a DJ (and I'm just talking about your pub/club DJ). A good DJ is like a good ref, you shouldn't notice them really. They provide the structure around where your night goes, but you really notice when they do their job badly. I tried it once, with a collection of top-class tunes, and I still managed to be brutal :D
eh firstly, where did i say that i can't mix.....and for all of you above, not just anyone can spent 4 hours mixing tunes, including 70's and 80's tunes as well as chart r n b and dance....i think 4tothefloor will agree with me on that.......
yes you notice what a guy/gal dj's badly......they don'e have the mic technique, the mixing abality, the means to structure the nights music, to read the crowd.....but simply there is a big difference between some one with a cd/record collection and someone who can dj.....
dance music might not be dea in ibiza but here it is on its last legs....pick any average run of the mill club, i can say that if played dance even for a short while the floor will empty...its a pity really cause i anyone else i like to play a broad specturm of music and this has cut out a whole genre.....also the amount of times the top name dj's are coming here has really cut back a lot, i did some work with judge jules in ibiza 2 summers ago and he told me the temple theatre in dublin cut back from booking him 8 to 4 times a year and that was 2 years ago
more proof is radio....2 fm......fm 104 have both given there big dance shows the bullet, although springer is still on friday with the excellent conor g, also a majority of the dance pirates are gone, nova is still here in dublin but the move is towards unban and all i can say is yuck............
the herald did actully do that and it was a sad reflection on our youth that they fell for it....
there are a lot of cowboy promoters out there who gave the good guys a bad name, a lot of dj's didn't get paid for gigs and got messed around....along with the drugs and the young scumbags that followed it gave the scene a bad name.....
one of my fav dance nights was in the river club in dublin on a sunday night, conor g and robbie butler playing quality dance and i liked it because it was a private members club and not a scum bag in sight......
commerical r n b is rubbish and i've said that from the start, i rahter play wilson pickett, aretha franklin, muddy waters...real r n b......but if dance isn't being played in commerical clubs then it is not seen by the majority of punters therefore it is dead to them...that is a simple fact and i will direct you to a forum where this was debated by a number of dance and commerical dj's who have respect for each other........

i respect all quality dj's no matter what they play , musical knowledge is important, any one who cn just drop a tune from the back of their box out of no where is, well respected by me...not matter what type of music it is..

I agree. I said in my last post though that track programming and crowd interaction are what you do, so i'm not disputing that.
Dance music played in commercial clubs is irrevelent, because dance music fans largely don't go to commercial clubs. I never go to commercial clubs, and neither do any of my friends cos there's no atmosphere there. They're also usually full of dimwits and people looking for fights. Even when dance is played in these clubs, the tunes are either famous old tunes, or cheesy formulated pop-dance tunes. Temple Theatre is closed btw, because of the scumbag element, drugs, a death at the club and noise pollution. Its no loss as it was 'Scumbags 'R' Us' defined. True, but as I said, it reached its peak - it's a natural progression for it to go back underground where it belongs. Where do you think the scene rose from in the first place? Its going back underground, which is better cos you get better quality music and better nights. Just cos the big clubs have jumped off of the dance bandwagon doesn't mean the scene is dead.Quote:

When I say mixing I mean beatmatching, not just fading one tune after another. Good luck to you if you get paid well to bang out cheese. I am not a musical snob though. I have a pretty vast musical collection that includes everything from Jazz to Pop (not modern pop, as 95% of it is rubbish). But when it comes to djing I don't see the point in playing pop. i said i mix every tune, for 60's to 70's to 80's etc.....its not that hard when you've been doing it for 11 years, what i mean is guys who can mix but mix the wrong stuff..even in a dance club you need to build up the crowd and play decent tunes, no point in mixing rubbish all night.....
i know the temple is closed....i was a res there for 2 years, that is how i got to knwo judge jules, i did mc at some of his gigs there,more reasons that scumbags for that closing......i'll pm you if you want....
I thought the dance clubs were closing because they take sod all over the bar, with so many punters being off their nodgers....

i had a grand time playing to over 3000 screaming students every wen night.....but when you do that every week its not a challange after a while so you move on and up to the next project until it bores you .....
