I Love Noel Hartigan

After seeing the performances of Noel when he came on as a sub last week in the Brandywell and again when he started yesterday I think that Liam should say, "Noel you've got your act together, now I'm going to start you and CP against Bohs. Don't let me down."
Hartigan has a chance to prove himself now.
With Mulligan sure to miss the Bohs game Murphy will surely consider the option of the same starting 11 from yesterday. CP being just 18, Noel is the more experienced of the two and should lead our attack. It's always great to have Morley as an option on the bench. While Morley is above both Hartigan and CP in the pecking order I think that he plays his best football with Mulligan.
Murphy has to be happy enough with the performances of CP and Noel to show confidence in them next week.

Stephen O'Flynn take note, there are at least four strikers in front of you. You have a lot of work to do!

Noel did play surprisingly well against Derry. I still don't think he the player to bring off the bench when chasing the game though.

Did he play well yesterday? He put a good pass through to whoever setup Kelvin for his cracker from what I saw on the news.

He was far better than usual, but then that still doesn't say much. IMO He is just too slow, too awkward, too light-weight and too disinterested to warrant a place. I'd personally throw in any one of the youngsters instead of him. Even though Tony Tynan is far from the finished article, at least he throws himself around and makes runs and gives a ****.

You already know that I think he played well yesterday. His partnership with CP will only improve the more they play together.

Ollie set up Kelvin for the goal.
Ollie was absent for long spells in the game again.

Noel is probably better in the away games where he doesn't get as much abuse & hes main role is to hold the ball up.

I'm surprised O'Flynn hasn't been given more opportunities as eventhough he wasn't great in the few games he played he did look like he would improve if the team were playing better. O'Flynn needs to learn to retain possession more & looks like a good eye for gola if given a chance.

It was actually Noel who set up Jonny C for the winner against Da Boez last year. I think that his hold up play is ok, so Id say that he'll be used again next week. I wouldnt be too sure of CP starting though, Id say that Morley & his experience will get the nod.

Hartigan was his usual self again yesterday - lazy, awkward and useless. C P O'Brien almost fought a lone battle up front - but how well he did! At one stage yesterday a cross came in but it was just too high for O'Brien - however where was Hartigan: almost up on O'Brien's back when all he had to do was drift in space at the back post like any decent striker and he would have been left with a free header and a certain goal.

The whole point is to have CP playing off Hartigan. Flick ons and the like. Hartigan is far from lazy! He has a lazy run like Kanu where he drags his legs and looks slower than what he is.

That was one mistake but when you look at how many times they've played together you can expect that they'll have misunderstandings.

Mulligan will be out for at least another week, so it's almost certain he wont start against Bohs.

Let me get this right, both our strikers made the same run to the back post, but Hartigan was the one at fault?

My own feeling on that incident was one of them (either of them really) should have made a run to the near post to give the crosser another option.

Strikers have to work on the crossover and CP is still a raw talent. Yes he should have gone near post to draw the defender away but these are things that he'll learn and I have no doubt that Liam Murphy is one of the best people to ensure that he does learn. Hartigan was probably wrong to go in for the same ball because if he had dropped back a few metres he'd have been open for the ball when it dropped. I think CP is still to slow to go to the near post. He's young and keen and always wants to get on the ball.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't criticising either player. All I was saying was they both made the same run (it happens from time to time, especially if the strikers are playing their first match together), but Seanie immediately saw this as Hartigan's fault. I was merely trying to point out that, depending on your viewpoint, either:
a) it was both their fault
b) it was neither player's fault

1) Fed the ball to Ollie C. that lead to the goal.
2) Cut out several longford passes in front of the back 4.
3) Held the ball well. I can't recall him losing the ball.
4) Played the ball on the ground when possible.

Hartigan looks lazier than he is. I'm no great fan of his but credit where credit is due - yesterday he had a good game. He covered a fair bit of ground too, back in defense helping out , in the middle of the park and up front.

Why don't you tell me 3 actual mistakes he made apart from playing for a team with the most begrudging supporters anywhere?

CP does not have eyes in the back of his head and couldn't have known if Hartigan was behind him. However Hartigan was staring his backside in the face. That was the only example of Hartigan's incompetence I have cited but there were plenty more if I wanted to go on.
