Settle a bet lads....can anyone name the squad for this one
It was Under 18
Dean Delaney (Everton), Alex O'Reilly (West Ham); Gary Doherty (Luton), Keith Doyle (St. Pat's), Richard Dunne (Everton), David Freeman (Notts Forest), Jason Gavin (Middlesbrough), Thomas Heary (Huddersfield); Ger Crossley (Celtic), Paul Donnolly (Leeds), Stephen McPhail (Leeds), Alan Quinn (Sheff Wed), Barry Quinn (Coventry); Robbie Keane (Wolves), Richie Partridge (Liverpool), Liam George (Luton), Ronnie O'Brien (Middlesbrough), Ryan Casey (Swansea)
I take it we were all watching the highlights of the final on RTÉ 2 today?
I think it's a shame that the majority of the talented players in that squad didn't make an impact at senior level. If you look at the same squads for the Argentinians, or the Germans, far more usually progress and become household names. The shocker for me is the Ireland squad which finished 3rd in the Youth World Cup. I think maybe 1 (D.Duff I think) went on to be a full international? The rest ended up in lower leagues in England or Scotland, or else they went to the LoI.

Ger Crossley?
And Good God one guy ended up with Luton?
No less than 6 of that team played with pats at one stage.
Liam George, that name sounds familiar. Where did he end up?
Yeah, I knew that. I'm sorry for the confusion, I meant players who gave or are giving a real, meaningful contribution to the senior national team's cause... ;)
However, that's off-the-point.
The team that won the U-19 Euros in '98 had 6 players who went on the gain a handful of full caps (as far as I know). The only ones who have made a lasting impression are Dunne and Keane! Alan Quinn and Barry Quinn were brilliant, it's such a shame their careers didn't have much success in comparison to Keane's and Dunne's. George Hamilton said that Liam George, who was allegedly touted as 'the future of Irish football' after that tournament, was the most unfortunate 'loss'. The poor guy's career was blighted by injury I believe.
Nope, He'd have been 16 at the time of the tournament
He turned out for St Pats for a spell too, Brian Kerr described him as a "special talent" and got him a trial there while he was in charge of the national side
wasn't there a thread on Liam George here a while back (I'm too lazy to dig it up).
I think he went to the US to play semi-pro, in the league underneath the MLS. Or was that someone else?
Would anyone be able to say where they are now.....and what they're doing??
Looking at the squad makes me realise the merry-go-round with the top EL clubs from year to year.
