The Impact and Importance of Sport
You know its amazing the impact that a sporting result can have on a nation. I went into work the day after we had won the six nations and I don’t think I have ever worked a day as good as it. The day after the Bulgaria match I was so so and today after the result against the Italians I feel great again. It’s such a wonderful feeling and it can do so much for a country and its people that are feeling the brunt of a serious recession.
I hope that Ireland can quality for South Africa in 2010, I am tired of spending summers having to look at other countries qualify while we have to sit at home and watch the likes of Frank Lumpard parade on our screens. Its so sad having to pop down to the pub of a beautiful summer evening enjoying a cool pintje of Juplier on the terrace (explanation later) and having to watch Germany against Holland through a foggy window, having nothing to look forward to and nothing to cry and cheer about afterwards.
There are no other fans in the world that deserve to go to the World Cup more than Eire, don’t forget that we won be best fans award at the three world cups we were at in 1990, 1994 and 2002 (as if you needed reminding!) All the fans that went to these tournaments were and are a credit to their country. That is why I love being Irish; when we play we always give 100% to the very end, we never ever give up, makes me so proud to be an Irishman
Unlike my adopted country Belgium, where I have lived for the last 9 years, they are a pathetic shower and a walking disgrace to their king Hubert (or whatever his name is) You see not all players who play for their country give 100% you know (albeit the problems in the Belgian camp are a lot more to do with other things than just football) Cant understand how a nation of people can live and exist like that. Its beyond my comprehension.
So, in ending I pray to God that we make it to 2010, I hope, I hope I hope. I want to be getting up for work on a Wednesday morning in June/July in 2010 knowing that that evening we will be facing Argentina in our first group match in the World Cup! :)
I need it
The fans need it
The country needs it
