I was just wondering could ye help me ?
I am probably looking for a needle in a hay stack, but anyway, I am looking for a guesthouse/ B&B in Galway, as near to the city centre as possible. Now, the bad news is I will be coming to Galway on the 31st of July, now I know, that's right in the middle of the Galway Races, but all help would be appreciated.

For B&B's, go to www.irelandwest.ie and try any of the ones on College Road (10 minutes walk to centre)
There's a place called Garvey's that had it's lease taken over at the end of last year. I can't quote you a price, but I remember being impressed. I'd say you can't go wrong with it really. Right on the square, a mere drunken stumble from Galway's various pubs, clubs and upmarket late night a la carte establishments.

On a related matter, I'm taking a drive down to Galway on Saturday for the long weekend. I'm looking advice on the following
Whats the best route to take driving from Belfast to Galway? Am i better going cross country or sticking to the motorways and going via Dublin ??
Can anyone recommend a decent pub in the city centre that won't be full of teenagers/students and will have the Ireland v Scotland rugby match on the telly
And somewhere nice to get dinner? I'm not looking to spend Michelin star money. Just somewhere that will do decent steaks, ribs, chicken etc

I have gone cross country to get to Drogheda before - pain in the ring. Stick to the motorways, motorway from Belfast to Ballinasloe, you'll hit a scatter of toll booths, but worth the financial pain compared to driving through bottlenecks in Slane, Navan and so on. Enjoy your weekend
Funny, thats completely the opposite of what everyone i have spoke to i the North said. I was planning on going Armagh-Monaghan-Cavan-Longford-Roscommon-Galway until now.
I'm in no rush to get down. Might go the scenic route to get there, and take in a bit of the country, then take the motorways home on the Tuesday. Every town & village in the country is sure to have a parade going through it or a Gaelic match or mass getting out or something to slow me up.
Is there any touristy stuff i should do, or is it a 3 day bender job? Anyone know what the Menlo Park is like. Its in Terryland so it can't be far from the Galway United stadium
Menlo Park is very good just a 5 minute stroll to the promised land.
Cliffs of Moher and Connemara are the main tourist attractions bot involve a bit of driving which you will probably be sick of. You could get a boat out to the aran islands but it could be a bit chilly out there this time of year..... a three day bender might be the safest option!Quote:

We also have a wide selection of tramps, drunks, layabouts, mentalists, crusties, "novel" buskers and general miscreants, I suggest some people watching especially after dark when everyone is tanked up and shirty, really I'm not kidding I used to live in town and me and the flat mates used to spark up and people watch at night, some of the best laughs I've ever had....
you can check out Kinvara quite easily from town, there's nice pubs, resaurants, arty places and the seaside there, it's only about 20mins from town, there's a boat that does lake crusies on the Corrib thats supposed to be quite nice... corrib princess it's called

I can confirm that if anyone ever plans drving from Belfast to Galway they should go via dublin until such times as the A3, N54, N55 and N63 are sorted out. For that to be the road betwen 2 provincial capitals in the C21st is a disgrace on both jurisdictions. It was nice for us on the way down as we were in no rush but if your trying to conduct any kind of business go via Dublin.
Galway itself is a fabulous city, though Salthill is a bit of a dump. But we had a great time anyway. Your lucky to be living there.
I am left with one question though. In total, how many branches of Dunnes is there? I must have counted half a dozen including the off-licence on Eyre Sq.
