My start to the season was interrupted by a little trip to Vegas and New York and things haven’t been going as well as hoped. The day before I left we were involved in a very close 1-0 defeat to Conwell. We played some excellent football, particularly in the second half of that game and it was only the width of the cross bar that prevented us taking at least a point.

I then missed three games and they resulted in two losses and a win. The defeats came in quick succession a 3-1 loss to South William Street and 4-3 to Sporting Vale. In both games I’m told we were the better team for long spells but failed to see the games out. In fact we led 3-1 against Vale and couldn’t hold out.

The last game I missed saw a change in fortune as we won 4-1 against a struggling Grant City side. Again it was a mixture of good and not so good from what I heard and consistency is something we need to find if this season is not going to slip away into disappointment.

I made my return on Saturday and also an unexpected first playing appearance of the season. Our opponents, St Mary’s Boys, came into the game on a good run of form and we knew this would be a real test of our character. We started the game really well and gave Mary’s very little opportunity to get on the ball and settle into the game. We were playing some crisp passes and working hard and got a deserved opening goal when Emmet Brien flicked a header into Daire Burns’ path and he smashed it over the advancing keeper and into the net.

Mary’s responded well to going behind and upped their work rate as we seemed to drop ours. They got a goal back when we gave away the ball in a very dangerous area and Mary’s took advantage, isolating defenders and finishing well. This was closely followed by a second as we looked very shaky, they got in behind with a nice through ball and Gary had little choice but to take down the forward as he tried to go around him. The resulting penalty came back off the cross bar but the taker was following up and finished the rebound off.

Going behind gave us a shake back to life and we got back on top for the remainder or the first half, Daire added a second when his initial effort came back of the post but he reacted first and acrobatically found the net with the rebound. At half time the game was very evenly balanced and both sides were well aware of the importance of the next goal.

There was noticeable tension in both teams early in the second half and the standard of football dropped off. Neither team was dominating the ball and there was scrappy chances at both ends, but it was Mary’s who got the vital break for their third goal and when it was followed within minutes by a fourth we were left with no option but to chase the game. As often happens in these scenarios Mary’s picked off a fifth goal on the break before the end and we were left trying to figure out where it all went wrong.

We’ve had a difficult start to the season, already facing Mary’s, Conwell and Vale who are the top three in the league at the moment, so we can take some heart from the fact that we have caused all three serious problems and with a bit more self-belief we might have taken points in all three games. The most disappointing result to date has to be the loss to South William St who haven’t exactly been setting the world on fire, but hopefully we can right that one later in the season. This week we play Ballymount in the opening round of the challenge cup so the pressure of winning league points is off. We’ll be looking to put in a big performance and to take a positive result to get the season moving in the right direction.
