Wakinstown Athletic 1 - 5 Terenure FC 3rds

We travelled to Walkinstown with a strong squad and high expectations and thankfully didn’t disappoint. From the start we took the game to Walkinstown, we played at a good tempo and moved the ball quickly on the slick surface. The midfield pairing of Kavo and Aido are developing a good understanding and took a hold of the game early on. After some promising early play a great strike from Ross Dawson after just six minutes really settled the nerves.

Walkinstown occasionally looked threatening on the break but for the most part we were defending well and creating the better chances. It was no surprise when Dave Fennelly doubled the lead with a close range finish from a corner, and was no more than his all action performance deserved.

After the second goal we maybe thought we could take a breather and dropped the work rate a bit, allowing Walkinstown to get a foothold and they pulled a goal back following an unfortunate spill in our box. When Walkinstown also hit the bar before half time we were looking a little unsure of ourselves and the half time whistle was welcome.

The second half was an even enough affair early on as both teams knew the next goal would be crucial. Kevin Murphy came in for Fennelly who had ran himself into the ground and he built on Dave’s good work, taking the game to the Walkinstown defence and producing a great run along the end line which eventually resulted in a tap in for Anto O’Dea to make it 3-1.

As Walkinstown tired our good pre-season really started to shine through, with Mark Gleeson and John Buckley adding fresh legs when coming in for Fiachra Fitzpatrick and Bob Harvey and we dominated the closing period of the game. Kevin Murphy produced a great strike to make it 4-1 and Ross Dawson got a second in the closing minutes to add the icing to the cake.

There were plenty of positives from the game as we cut down on basic errors while improving the quality and speed of our own play. The fitness of the squad was very evident and we’ll be hoping to add another three points on Monday away to Sportslink.
