View Full Version : Liverpool
Disgrace - complete disgrace.
How a side who purport to be candidates for big prizes can play with such utter disregard for basic football is bewildering.
Their only strategy is to lump it - every pass in midfield is a hurried "please don't give the ball to me" shift to another clueless player who lumps it.
Half the time the ball was not even on the screen it was so high in the air.
One exception - Alonso - and he is the guy Benitez wants rid of.
Gerrard was a joke - he cannot play midfield and actually refuses to play midfield. He wa slike one of these guys who thinks he is much better than everybody and that a simple tidy pass to a colleague is a waste.
He cannot do it - Benitez knows it but cannot get him out of there. Gerrard is a striker in the Sheringham role but the clueless coach cannot figure how to play Keane Torres and Gerrard.

Leige were 14/1 to win last night. The fact Liverpool were cheered off the pitch by their fans shows how small-time that club has become, Stevie G, Babel, Alonso, Keane and Torres are all able to score from distance but should that mean that they shouldnt try and create anything other than a long range shooting stratagy?
Maybe they might get sick of having to scrape into the Champions league through finishing 4th and going through qualifiers and acually make an effort in their domestic league this year? but for a club which has gone from 'best in Europe' to 'decent cup team' I doubt it.

Gerard is not even average when he plays in the middle, he's really poor there, doesnt stand out at all. As for Kuyt!!!! Its a good job the cross hit him on the thigh or somewhere rather than his foot or they would still have been looking for it.

I imagine they would. I sat through the two hours last night, for my sins, and there were a lot of moans, groans and whistles from the crowd. Any last minute winner is going to put a gloss on it, but I would say it was short lived.

Pats beat JFK Olimps 2-0 and the Indo wrote about it being a "truly dreadful game"
Man City beat some Faroes team 2-0 and they spoke about how City performed with "professional care"
Anyone see any reports of lat night being one of the worst games of all time? Thought not. It was though..

how did Gerrard "refuse" to play centre mid?? another person who just singles him out. Kuyt,Beneyoun,Babel,Aurelio and Arbeloa were all MUCH worse than him. how can you expect any centre mid player to play well with the 2 "wingers" coming into the centre,so there is nowhere to spread the ball. Alonso hit a few hopeless balls aswel and i take it youre not a Pool fan? if you were youd notice that Alonso, when played last season, was muck aswel whereas Gerrard and El Nino ran amock.
As for the fans not booing the team?? why should they?? we just won with a last minute winner...if that doesnt excite then what does? every time we lost the ball so easily there was moans and groans. no fans should ever booh a winning result.
Its glaringly obvious Liverpool need 2 wingers who stay out wide. this gives the CM's more room to play rather than trying to fit the ball through the smallest of gaps with opposing players right on top of the receiver!
either way though, played 4 terrible terrible games but are still 2/2 wins in league and into group stages.
SG is out for about a month now though so we will see if Pool miss him or not...im betting we will.

1. Gerrard refused to play centre mid insofar as he went missing. he did not show for the ball - time after time he looked the other way - he did not look to be interested in doing the right thing - he constantly lumped it and "refused" to do the simple centre mid things a la Scholes, carrick, fabregas etc
2. I do not diagree that Kuyt or others were worse but that is not the point - SG is supposed to be a leader and he failed - again
3. I am not a Pool fan but they have the best strikers in the league - the Torres / Keane partnership vastly outweighs Chelse / Arse or Man U but with an ability to create from midfield they will struggle to win
4. You are correct - the lack of width is a problem but I see that as subsidiary to the problem with SG. SG is a top class striker but an average centre midfielder
5. I am not a gimp - relax - calm down - I think Liverpool were crap but that does not a gimp me make !

havent a clue why we dont have wingers.....i nearly found myself going through the tele with Kuyt and Smellyoun always ALWAYS going infield and cloggin up the pitch,it wouldnt be so bad if Arbeloa or Auerellio could pass cross the ball.
Villa will be a proper test though at Villa Pk and without Gerrard aswel...

Have you seen Masch lpay for the Argies? Hes much better as he doesnt need to hold as much....but what he does at liverpool is give Gerrard freedom to go forward, which he does better than most. hes a much better player than hes given credit for.
Carra is a quality defender, end of. i suppose Vidic,Brown,Terry,Toure are all footballing gods at CB?
you predicted a Pool defeat the other night...anymore tips for the weekend?

no its not his sole reason for being in the team but it is one of them. anwya he doesnt have to give him freedom for the next few weeks as SG aint playin so hopefully we'll see the Argie Masch.
It just frustrates me when Manc/Arsenal fans (not sayin youre one) say this that and the other about obviously very good players but if they were in the United squad they would think they were great.
one thing i will defo agree with you on is Arbeloa...he is TERRIBLE!!!!!

So your saying Mascherano is in the team to give Gerrard freedom?? He's like a dog after a bone, and when he finally gets it, he hasn't a clue what to do with it... As for Carragher, none of the players you mentioned hoofs the ball away as much as he does. He's a superb defender, but he thinks he has to play safe every time. Pass it every once in awhile for Petes sake.
Didn't he hoof it away into the net on Saturday:p

This makes me laugh. Only since Claude Makelele came to England do managers suddenly feel the need to play Water Carriers as Cantona once put it. The game is full of poor footballers who can run all day and win the ball and make tackles but not pass any better than their Grandmother. Mascherano is a workhorse no doubt, but he's a terrible footballer. Keane, Viera, Essien, they all had everything. Work, tackle and the football too. If I were Benitez I'd play Alonso and Gerrard. Send Mascherano to Football school along with Jamie 'I like to hoof every ball' Carragher and Alvaro 'I'm far crapper than Finnan but I'm Spanish so I play' Arbeloa
you are completey wrong about Mascherano. He is a top class footballer great positioning, workrate, disciplined, tackles, runs, links play all the time. He will sit in fron of the back four with Alonso in a 4-2-3-1 formation that worked brilliantly for last 10 games of last season. So in that sense carragher doesn't need to play ball as he can link it to Masherano or Alonso in any case both Agger and Skertel are comfortable on the ball. Carragher you cant deny is a very good defender - which is what he gets paid for. Regarding Arbeloa no argument there - he is MR average -ok at most things but not that good really. Finnan is better but struggling with fitness and looks to be on the way out. I still think liverpool will sign a left winger plus an attack minded right sided player before Monday.

Arbeloa and Aurelio are terrible, haven't seen a whole lot of Dossena to have an opinion but Finnan surely deserves his place.
Benayoun is also out of his depth, terrible stuff.

Ha ha ha... Look at what you listed.. Wheres passing, dribbling, assisting, scoring, heading?? He's a water carrier.. A general dogs body. I dare you to watch him on Sunday at Villa. You count the amount of passes he makes. Or forward passes even. He reminds me a lot of David Batty. Tackle tackle tackle, pass it two yards backward, tackle tackle tackle... Snore...
you conviently choose to ignore the links play all the time part of my comment. Fits perfectly into the team - it takes all kinds to blend a team and he is world class at what he does for the team. Jeez David Batty..you clearly dont rate the man with that comparison. :)
Anyway watch the game Sunday and watch how much more balanced the team will look with him in it. He does his job and does it really well to boot.

I have to say that I have been disappointed with Liverpool so far this season. Yes, we won our last three but we need pacy, tricky wingers to bring width into the team and stretch opposing defenders. We are too shallow; all the play is going down the centre. It certainly does not help Gerrard's game...he needs the space to open up defences. With all due respect to Steve Finnan, and he has been a consistent player for Liverpool, he is 32 and he is hardly going to get any better, but there has to be better full backs out there. Hoofing is not one of the traditions instilled at Liverpool FC under the legendary Bill Shankly; the last exciting Liverpool team was under Roy Evans. Houllier's football was very boring.

why bring your love of manchester united into it.. unfortunatly the mancs do it with a mixture of never say die attitude and a lot of great football / movement of players and our course a couple of half decent wide players :D something which is sadly missing from liverpool at the moment :ball:

God help the Pool if they ever lose Torres for any length of time, could not even manage one shot on target against Villa, and with Robbie Keane miles behind Darren Fletcher in the goalscoring chart you'd have to wonder if another Crouchesque drought is on the way.

Liverpool performance v Aston Villa on Sunday was one of the most infuriating, inept and tactically unimaginative performances I have ever witnessed from them. What is the point in buying Rieira if Benitez will not play him? Dossena was rubbish.
Benitez was cowardly in his approach to the game against a Villa side who were there for the taking.
If I was a liverpool fan (god forbid) i'd by dying to see the back of Benitez..... they are by far the worst team to watch in the premiership. The tactics Benitez employ's are dumbfounding.... The Dirk right-wing. Keane in left-wing. Why buy strikers only to play them out of position?? Then a moment comes where you think he will be forced to make the right changes in Torres getting injured. Put your new proven 20+ goals a season stirker in the middle where he naturally plays?..... ok.. bring on a 10million quid, highly rated by Arsene Wenger, dutch international then?? no... he brings on a kid, who nobody's ever heard of, with only 18 senior appearances and 1 goal in the f**king french league!!!!!!
Thank god I hate the pool... or I might be burdened with a slight feeling of sympathy for fans who have to put up with that clown.

Liverpool need two new full backs and two class wingers to compete for the PL title. Fortunately Benitez hasn't noticed this yet and the drought will continue. They have no width whatsoever, everything goes through the middle and bar the odd flash of genius from Torres they offer very little in an attacking sense. Benitez is on borrowed time. Robbie Keane on the wing? :)

Agree with all that bar the centre half bit. For me Agger and Skrtel are 2 that are more than good enough although we haven't seen them together as a partnership yet. Individually though I've been very impressed with both.
I'd have both of them as the first choice pairing with Carragher as back up. Not bad in most people's books surely? Carragher has his limitations but his desire and appetite make up for most of them. He's one of the few players about that's drawn every last ounce out of what ability he has.

Agree with that. He's one of those players who wouldn't be any use with, say, Newcastle or Tottenham but obviously would die for Liverpool. Every club needs players like him (if only in the squad)
