Drogs may have missed chance

Drogheda United travel to Dalymount Park on Tuesday night knowing that they should already be through to the semi-finals of this season’s FAI Carlsberg Cup, but they now face a mammoth task in overcoming Bohemians to make it through to the last four. Kick-off at 7.45pm.

Drogheda under new manager Paul Doolin were the better side for 90 minutes of the drawn match at O2 Park at the weekend, only for a Simon Webb goal, two minutes into injury time to force the game into a reply.

The Louth side had taken the lead as early as the 20th minute, when Andy Myler headed home Declan O’Brien’s cross and should have extended their lead on numerous occasions with Myler and O’Brien being guilty of missing clear cut chances.

Myler will not forget this match for some time as his penalty miss in the second half which was soon followed by O’Brien shooting wide when it seemed easier to score gave Bohs’ a lifeline which they duly took when Webb fired home from close range.

Bohemians manager Stephen Kenny must once again plan with influential defender Colin Hawkins, who is still suffering from a hamstring injury, while Damien Lynch and Mark Rutherford are also unavailable through illness and injury respectively.

Kenny must also do without striker Stephen Ward who jetted out with the rest of the Ireland Under-19 squad to San Marino for the European Championship first phase qualifiers, but the Gypsies may have defender Ken Oman and striker Paul Keegan available for selection.

Drogheda will be boosted by the return of experienced defender Pat Scully, who was suspended for the drawn game, while midfielder Darren Beesley has recovered from a back injury also.
