Mons hand job to Cooke

Monaghan United have confirmed that former Republic of Ireland Women’s manager Mick Cooke has taken over the managerial hot-seat from Bobby Browne, who resigned from the position last week.

Cooke, who has left his position as manager of Leinster Senior League outfit Ballyfermot United to take the reigns of the eircom First Division strugglers will always be remembered for the monumental work he done whilst in charge of the Ladies senior side.

When Cooke was first appointed as manager of the Irish ladies team in 1992, the girls in green did not have much of a reputation in the world of ladies soccer, but just eight years later, he had delivered two trophies and made it to the third round of the European Championships.

Such was the colossal work done by Cooke with the Ireland under 16’s, under-18’s and senior side that it took three people to replace in 2000, with former Derry City defender Noel King taking over the senior side.

Damien Richardson, who was then manager of Shamrock Rovers took on Cooke as his assistant where he spent two seasons before joining Ballyfermot last season.

Cooke will oversee his new charges for the first time when they line out against fellow strugglers Athlone Town on Wednesday night and with just 16 games remaining, the Mons need to start picking up points to avoid re-election.
