There was talk of this before but nothing much came off it , as the premiership has just kicked off i think it might be a good time to get it up and running.

Any ideas on how we could do it ?.

I was thinking everyone makes 1 post, starts with say 20 points ( 20euro) and you put up your bets and update your kitty each week all with in the 1 post so there isnt a massive list of posts going on for pages.

Its just for fun and would have to be done with a lot of honesty as you will be editing your own post all the time but thats the only way i can think of getting it to work. unless someone else has worked a similar project before

Yes, its a good idea.

Starting Bank: 20 points

Bets either 0.5 point, 1 point or 1.5 point?

I think we could leave it up to the person as to how much they want to bet if they want to stick 20 on Utd winning then they can do that. but i think bets will be around 1 or 2 points on average.

So you would post for example

New Kitty 21 points
previous kitty 20 points

Bets

weekend x/x/08
Utd V Chelsea : Utd win @ 2/1 paddy power. Bet 2 points Result Win (+3p)
Liverpool V Everton: Liverpool win @ evens Ladbrokes. Bet 2 points Result Loss;) (-2p)

Profit +1

Then when you are putting next weeks bets up put them above the previous bet that way at the end of the season the first bets made will be at the bottom of the list.

I cant see why there would be i suppose with in reason ( no big brother bets or ones likethat ) Irish english leagues internationals maybe ? keep it just football related.

And on the odds id say any big name bookies site would be fine

The Racing Post do a naps competition where you pick one game each week from any of the english or scotish leagues (internationals during international weeks) you get €1 on the best price available on oddschecker. Runs for the whole season. I wouldnt mind keeping track of it.

Right lets try to get some rules together see if we can get this going before the weekend.

Rules so

1. For football bets use Irish, English, Scottish leagues and international matches.Golf Snooker and Rugby for big tournaments also aloud.
2. Use Oddschecker.com to get the odds
3. Starting kitty 20 points
4. Minimum bet 0.5 points, Max no restrictions as long as you have that amount in the
kitty
5. Bets must be posted 1/2 hour before kick off.
6. Only 1 post per person, you edit and update your own posts to reflect your results( scrap this we will have to use the normal way)
7. Top of the post should show your present and previous kitty amounts
8. Bets posted like this :
game : result : odds : where did the odds come from : amount staked : result :
profit/loss
Ie
Man utd V Chelsea : Utd win : 2/1 : paddy powers : 2 points : Win : +3
9. it will have to work on the honour system so any one found cheating will be kicked out straight away
10. No talking about bets or anything else in the League thread, we could leave this one open for chatting about it and keep the new one just for bets to keep it clean.

anything else ???

Does it have to be football, I tend to find some value in other sports, I think that restriction should be dropped.

All the rules are up for debate untill we all decide on a good set.

I only thought just football because its a footy site so we would all be on a pretty even starting point with regards football betting .

But i reckon we could introduce other sports say golf, snooker and rugby for the big comps. I don't think we should include horse or greyhound racing.

Sounds interesting but this:
6. Only 1 post per person, you edit and update your own posts to reflect your resultswon't work. There's a time limit on post edits, 1 day I think.

Ah Bugger ! thats a big spanner in the works if there is pages after pages of bets trying to keep an eye on it will be impossible.

Edit: i was reading in the rules that the edit time limit can be set dont know if thats per thread or for the whole site , if it was per thread and we could get just this one open it would be great.

I would love if we could put up something like the poll results that go on top of some threads that we could update to show what everyone is on . rather than making up a league table because i reckon some people will bet once a week other maybe 3 times so a table would be distorted.

I think laying bets might not be a good idea for a betting league.

Right guys is every one happy with the rules above i was going to open the Betting League Thread get a fresh clean thread keep all the chatting in here and the betting only in the other one, Looks like we will just have to keep posting our bets rather than editing the 1 post but we ll give it a go i reckon there will be about 7 or 8 of us so it shouldnt be too hard.

I plan to open it at 1.30ish if everyone is happy.

Why only bet for Irish, Scottish, English games, what about Italy, Spain, France, Germany etc, big leagues and also, my best bets usually come from other leagues also, I think that rule should be undone.

anto1208
21/08/2008, 2:27 PM
This is why i spent all week asking ye to put foward rules to be used :)

Think ill leave it as is just for the moment keep it small and simple untill it gets up and running. Its just a bit of fun but if all goes well in the next few weeks we can add more leagues/sports etc.

once this weekend is over no more people can join so once we know where we stand and how many are taking part we can expand it.(might leave it open till next weekend in case some one misses the dead line we can decide on monday )

Would you not have made a profit of 4 there, or is that just a typo?

I've run of these before so a few tips.

1) No limit on the sports. Not fair on those who gamble on basketball, horseracing etc.
2) Pick one bookies odds only. Having multiple odds etc leads to too much confusion. Its mostly for fun so getting 6/5 on boyles rather than the 11/10 the Paddy Power odds give your for the game won't really matter. Betfair should be absolutely banned (giving the fluctuations)
3) Have an entry list. People put forward their name on a thread and then the organisor works from that
4) Set a maximum amount of bets per week per poster. 5 is enough.
5) If someone doesn't make a bet that week they lose 5 points
6) None of this editing your own post ****e, get someone in charge and they monitor each bet and check the result of it. They should also check the price of each bet (which is why picking one bookies site helps)
7) Have one thread per week, and absolutely no discussion in it. Just bets and the results.
8) Whoever's in charge should do weekly roundups. Have the betting week start on Monday @ 7am (which allows people bet on NFL, baseball and basketball on late US sunday nights).
9) To help casual punters, make the betting fund €100 instead of 20 units. Its handier too for working out winnings

The important thing is to get an organiser who's committed to doing it and has the time. If its a free for all it becomes a joke.

Oh and the bets should be placed like so (easy to scan, read and understand)

St Pats v Sligo Rovers
John Murphy to score first @ 6/1
€20 to win

Im going to run it and im trying to inlist the help of the Boss as he knows his stuff on the betting front.

1. I wanted to limit the sports a bit because it will take forever to check if people are betting on obscure horse racing in kentucky, i reckon the range we have gives a good cover to most people, if all you know if the EPL then you bet on that. Think horse racing will empty peoples pockets too quickly im hoping that this will last the year. i originally only wanted footy as this being a footy site i felt people would have a good knowledge about it. But again the rules are to be set by those taking part so if people want to change it i dont mind

2. i dont mind on this front if people want to agree on one bookies then thats fine but i dont mind just using odds checker as the one site to check odds.

3. we ll need to work on this i was hoping to get everyone starting at the same time on the same amount so we can run it as a proper league. But with people on hols this time of year it may not be possible.

I think we should start it this week and leave it open untill next friday after that they can pm me and we ll try sort something out reduced entry points or something.

4. again i dont mind i want to keep the rules to a min i dont want it to be too overbearing but again ill leave it up to the guys taking part. i think max bets per day could be done but if you wanted to do 2 on monday night footy and 4 at the weekend you should be aloud

5. i dont want this with people heading on hols around this time they could easily miss a week, I think loosing points isnt too fair maybe if you dont bet for 2or3 straight weeks (without telling me your on hols )your out . And some weeks there just might not be any bet you want to put on.

6. the edit your own posts would have kept it tidy and i cant see why some one would cheat, its just a bit of fun you get nothing for winning and when i was reading the site rules it said you can see what they edited anyway in case they do cheat.

7. thought this would flood the betting section with threads and the mess wouldnt go down well with the mods so i wanted to keep it all in the one location but if the mods dont mind i dont.

8. seems fine

9. also i dont mind i chose 20 to keep bets small and fun

I left the rules up for anyone interested in taking part to give there imput and anyone that was interested did and we came up with the ones in post 1 of the betting league thread. They have been set now and Any changes we do make will be minor so can you reopen the thread so people can get there bets on.

anto1208

Apologies to all those who have been trying to bet but have nt been able to, its out of my hands the mods locked the thread .

If you want to place any bets you can put them in here and we will use this weekend as a test run. ( so basically these bets will be free bets and wont count in the league ). to see how well or how badly it will run.

For this weekend use the rules in post 1 of the Foot.ie Betting league thread. On monday i will put the rules back up for debate so if you are interested please at least leave a post saying so or contribute something to the rules so we can get as many people as possible happy with this before we start.

If we post the rules monday and close them on thursday morning that will give us time to get bets on for the weekend. But in the mean time if you have any ideas on rules throw them out.
