Just seen this guy has been included in Sean McCaffery's u19 squad for the upcoming tournament.

Bit of a strange one I thought, as he has just left a league side, Brentford, to sign a short term deal at Blue Square Prem side, Histon, as cover at right back for them according to BBC.

So, not exactly pulling up trees in his career thus far and a surprise recruit I think, as I think its his first involvment with thi Irish set up, but could be wrong.

Anyone know anymore about him?

Did you mean Lanre O'Yebanjo the banjo player from Galway? :D

yeah, cousin of Robert O'Baggio and Robert O' Carlos.

Seriously, whats a guy falling out the tail end of the league football without ever troubling the first team too much by the looks of it, being recruited into one of our squads for, and im guessing he has been actively recruited as he is down as English on the Brentford site.

I dont get it. you?

Teency bit strange alright. Must be some connection or something.

Otherwise, hot on the heels of Joe Lapira, one can only assume our international scouts' primary concern is finding players with cool/dubious hair (http://www.histonfc.co.uk/news.php?id=198).

At least Sean Scannell may have someone to trade hair-keeping notes with...

Yet another example of a player being brought up purely on the basis that he is eligible for another country

So we have no other legitimate options at home or abroad aged 19 or under other than a guy playing in the Conference!?

I somehow doubt it.

Exactly, surely there must be somebody else playing at a higher standard than somebody plying their trade in the fifth division in England.

Not in Kerry it's not.

Anyways, he made his competitive debut yesterday as a 72nd minute substitute, coming on at RB, as Histon bravely succumbed 1-0 to the might of Mansfield. And ye'll never guess who scored the winner for Mansfield! The legendary pineapple-head man himself - Jason Lee! Brief BBC report (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_conf/7555776.stm).

By the way Oilovethebanjo's agent goes by the name of Sean Blom. Anyone know of any connection he may have with McCaffrey?

I have noticed that the fai sometimes tries to raise the profile of a player that may be struggling to get a club.Getting a call up might give a boost to a player in his search for a club as high up the league as possible.

Oyebanjo has been first choice as far as I can tell at Histon recently. They're tied for 2nd best in goals against too

Sean O'Meara

Main reason for the call up is Kit Carson.

Carson is 60 and from the Republic of Ireland.

Kit Carson is the head of Histon FCs Youth Policy and he has strong ties with the Irish FA.

Histon are maybe an unknown quantity, they are basically a village team on the outskirts of Cambridge, but they are an up and coming force in the Conference building their rise from a quality youth policy. Carson has been give money and a free reign to groom talent from around Britain to make Histon the best team in their immediate area. (Currently they are on a par with near neighbours Cambridge Utd)

They're not Manchester United but a few years from now they could with a bit of luck sneak into the English football league.

Carson is most famous for his time at Norwich City and Peterborough Utd when he was director of their Football Academies.

At Norwich Lee Power, Chris Sutton and Ruel Fox among others came through the youth policy.

At Peterborough he brought through Simon Davies and Matthew Etherington and Irish Under 21s such as Mark McKeever, Dave Billington, Tony Sheilds and Nial Inman.

Before joining Histon Carson was one of Chelseas chief scouts and Cambridge Youth Academy director.

Histon were mentioned on Radio BBC 5-Live last night, as I was driving home. Something about them being 33-1 to win whichever league it is that they are in at the start of the season. The presenter had a mate who knows his lower league football and was telling him to "get on it!"

I presume they are top fo the league now? never heard of them before last night and now this thread!!

Fairly certain these threads are for keeping tabs and discussion of the players. I'm not championing him for the Irish side. I've never seen him play. His name just popped up.

I started the thread as a sideswipe at the pointlessness of chasing a guy like this, but I see in 4-4-2 this month he is being touted as a potential transfer to the Champoinship with Brentford looking a bit daft for releasing him.

If you can't take a chance with selections for an U19 game - without fear of a craft poke in the eye - then when can you !

Some background info if interested. Lanre, spent most of his football education at The Academy of West Ham. played alongside Bondz N'Gala (currently 1st team sub at WHFC) his link to Ireland is his Irish mum. main reason for playing at Histon is probably he can earn as much there as in div 1.

Back with Brentford in League 1.

Has a facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/people/Lanre-Oyebanjo/631635084

If he's proud enough to put a picture of himself in the green jersey as his profile picture, he's Irish enough for me.

What? From what I can tell he's still at Histon and currently has a knee injury. Was on the bench last weekend for them as well.

Played a blinder today as York were promoted to League Two, starting out playing on the right side of a three man midfield and ending up playing right back and making some crucial blocks. Also scored the second in their 2-0 FA Trophy win last weekend at Wembley. From what I've seen of him he's definitely capable of playing in League Two and very possibly higher. As I recall one of the reasons he stayed in the Conference in spite of having some suitors from the Football League was he was finishing a degree or working or something like that.

He's doing a degree in mathematics and finance so he's not open to full-time football as of yet: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/13631694

I'm sure he'll move into football league and further up the ranks once that is completed.

While specialist midfielders often do stand in at right back (Fletcher and Valencia at United, for instance), it's quite for a right-back to move into midfielder, unless it's as a winger. I haven't seen Oyebanjo play, but if that's a narrow 3-man midfield they play then he must have something about him.

I'm pretty sure York are full time anyway so perhaps he already made that transition.

Here is their line up from today
http://i48.tinypic.com/2wmp3pt.png

He slotted in for Challinor when he went off injured after about 40 minutes, I wouldn't say he was getting deep in to the channels like a winger prior to that. He also takes many of their set pieces and has a long throw.

As a side note, Keith Keane who has been at Luton for years played the full 90 in the middle of midfield in a similar formation.

Oyebanjo continues slow but steady climb up the English football ladder with a move to League One Crawley Town - recently turned 24 so might yet become an option if he has a couple of good years

Plenty to admire about this lad. He surely has his degree finished at this stage and may well be able to devote an even further level of commitment to the game now.

A very pragmatic and grounded viewpoint by him and, as far as I'm aware, York were willing to stick him in midfield, as well as his natural right-back, showing he has a bit about him when it comes to football too. (EDIT: My memory serves me correct, as per the self-explanatory image above )

Hopefully the ascent continues.
