Surely that's got to supplant the missed penalty against Milan as the most famous miss in Irish football (**** it, sporting) history? Especially as it would have sealed the greatest result ever achieved by an Irish football team.

Hughes had very good games both home and away. It was a difficult shot to hit first time. Fair play to Drogheda. If they had a decent goalie then they would have easily gone through.

ahwill you get out of it. typical irish sentiment to critise! sure you could have had ronaldo or rooney in his position and they could have missed. it happens in football

I agree he played well, and that the 'keeper cost them the tie. (Don't agree it was a difficult shot, but it happens.)

But if nothing else, his place in the history of Irish football is assured. Minnock's was a relatively meaningless penalty in the context of the tie, and it stuck to him for decades.

The league has moved on a lot since those days. It was a bad miss alright.

Personally I think Jason Byrne's howler against Deportivo La Coruna a few years back was the most costly miss ever. If he scored I think Shels would have gone on to win and qualify for the CL.

Lets hope Drogs can make the back pages of all tomorrow's newspapers and for the right reasons. :)

UNtil he has a stand named after him in Richmond Park, HUghes can't be compared to Minnock

For Pat's-specific purposes, Martin Reilly is ahead of him in that queue.

Yep... I still haven't forgiven him (although Reilly's chance wasn't anything near like hughes')

It has to be said it was a bad miss by Hughes, which is a shame cos he's a decent player.

Will be interesting to see how Kyiv do next week against Spartak.
Not great I'd say, they were shocking at the back.

Worst header ever from Byrne. Cahills cross was perfect. Just hit the target and the momentum would have seen it past the keeper. But alas it was to hit the ground.

Except Martin Reillys chance was in the first leg. Yes, it might have given Pats a famous away victory, but there was an awful long way to go in that tie, whereas tonight, if that had gone in Drogs would surely have gone through. I'm inclined to agree about the keeper though. With a better performance in goal Drogheda might just have sneaked through this tie. If is a horrible word to use in these circumstances, but... if they'd hung onto the 1-1 last week they'd be through now.

Hold on- bad and all as the miss was the ref had already given a (very harsh) free out so it was irrelvant.

I'm pretty sure he didn't, I thought so at the time too, but he was just calling attention on for the injured defender.

yeah but kiev would have approached and played this game differently if they only had a draw

Just saw the miss there...that was shocking:eek:. Still a very good player all the same.

The difference between the two sides was how both sides took their chances. Last week Kiev's first goal came from a similiar position. Give Hughes another 100 chances like that tonight, in training, and see how many he'll miss. All he had to do for Drogs this week, was tap it low and hard, to earn €15 million. Instead it will only ever be seen again on Christmas videos.

Thought the shot off the post was even more sickening. When the keeper spilt it, I thought it was in. If it was Kiev, you know it would have gone in.

More like Tommy McConville's miss for Dundalk against Celtic in Oriel in '79 in terms of significance and timing etc. The Town lost 3-2 in Parkhead and Tommy missed a howler, the game ending up 0-0, with Celtic facing Real Madrid in the quarter finals the next round... I still have dreams about it. Tommy is a living legend, international caps, multiple trophies, played against Pele, Cryff, Beckanbauer etc, but Jim McLaughlin is still the only man who can slag him about it !!

In fairness, Hughes effort could have gone anywhere - he's a class act and it's great to see himself and Faz doing so well, whatever about Drogheda :p

Faz didn't play very well in either leg. He gave the ball away a lot, didn't create anything and actually looked like a very lazy player. Hughes on the other hand is a very good player

Who made the assist for Drogs' goal in the first leg?;)
