Dont think theres been a thread on this yet so here goes ...

First one up .... Intermission (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0332658/) 2003

A raucous story of the interweaving lives and loves of small-town delinquents, shady cops, pretty good girls and very bad boys. With Irish guts and grit, lives collide, preconceptions shatter and romance is tested to the extreme. An ill-timed and poorly executed couple's break-up sets off a chain of events affecting everyone in town.

There's the hapless romantic and his sex-starved best friend, the hotshot detective and the crook he's after, a young girl on the rebound with an older married man -- not to mention his deserted wife, an ambitious TV producer, an abandoned fiancée, a preteen trouble-maker -- all of whom are unaware of how their choices are profoundly intertwined. Add a botched robbery, some brown sauce, a woman's moustache, flying rocks and dancing single seniors and you have "Intermission."

Have to say that the cast is very good, Colin Farrell, Cillian Murphy, Colm Meaney, Deirdre O'Kane, Shirley Henderson and Kelly MacDonald (who i always thought was Irish but she is Scottish) and the story line was good. As comedies go its very well done i thought.

Some Mother's Son (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117690/) is my favourite republican film by far. The Commitments (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101605/), The Snapper (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108170/), The Van (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118064/), In Bruges (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780536/) and The Butcher Boy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118804/) are also very good comedies. I generally like most Irish films. Colm Meaney is a great actor imo.

Dead Bodies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0349340/) is well worth checking out. The Front Line (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0488121/), How Harry Became A Tree (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0256084/) (Colm Meaney, Cilian Murphy), Accelerator (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0193701/) and the ones mentioned above are all good films.

Any film with Brendan Gleeson in is going to be good, love watching him.

Give In Brugges a go. Not an Irish film per se, but it's written/directed by an Irishman (Martin McDonagh) and stars Farrell and Brendan Gleeson

The Wind That Shakes The Barley (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460989/)

The Wind That Shakes the Barley is a 2006 Ken Loach film set during the Irish War of Independence (1919–21) and the Irish Civil War (1922–3). Written by long-time Loach collaborator Paul Laverty, this drama tells the story of two County Cork brothers, played by Cillian Murphy and Pádraic Delaney, who join the Irish Republican Army to fight for Irish independence from Great Britain.

Brilliant choice. I loved that film, mainly for Brendan Gleeson's role.

I really liked Michael Collins (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117039/) too.

Surprised no one has mentioned Adam & Paul (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419420/) or Inside I'm Dancing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417791/) yet. Personally, I didn't like them but many others seem to drop them.

Agreed, this is a quality film. Top marks, in fact i thought alot of Irish films before this were not great. This one really raised the bar.

Man About Dog (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374018/) - 2004

There is a good review of this film here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2004/10/20/man_about_dog_2004_review.shtml) -> "Three pedigree chumps learn that every underdog has its day in this freewheeling Irish comedy. In hock to the tune of £50,000 to a Belfast bookie and saddled with a dopey greyhound that wouldn't run if its backside was on fire, Mo Chara (Allen Leech), his perpetually stoned mate 'Cerebral' Paulsey (Tom Murphy), and the terminally unlucky Scud (Ciaran Nolan) head south in the hope of seeing a man about a dog. Foul-mouthed and funny, Man About Dog is full of great craic."

I haven't seen that, as I have a serious aversion to Pat Shortt. I was going to mention I Went Down. Super film. In Bruges is very good too. Common factor between them, Brendan Gleeson, who for my money is the best Irish actor going. Thought Adam and Paul had some funny moments too and portrayed the pathetic, wasted life of the junkie quite well. Name of the Father was horrendous I thought, almost unforgiveably so, considering the liberties it took with the actual story it was supposed to be portraying. I read Gerry Conlons book, and the film bore practically no resemblance to it.

I WENT DOWN and ADAM&PAUL are my two favourite Irish films.

My least favourite was IN AMERICA that awful, overated, patronizing, cringing,
manipulative piece of Junk by Jim Sheridan.

Veronica Guerin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312549/) - 2003

Based on a true story, this is about the Irish journalist Veronica Guerin (Cate Blanchett), a reporter for The Sunday Independent, who exposed some of Dublin's most powerful crime barons and drug lords in 1996. But later that year she was gunned down by assassins hired by the same criminal drug lords she exposed.

Personal preference is one thing, Cinematic standards is another.
Man about Dog is enjoyable.
Many of those films already mentioned here are better quality than than Man about Dog, re script, direction, acting and in all the other cinema standards that define quality.

I'd also add in Irish films but directed by non Irish.
3 Films from 3 of some of the best directors of all time.

The Informer 1936 dir John Ford
Odd Man Out 1947 dir Carol Reed
The Dead 1987 dir John Huston

Plus
Bloody Sunday 2000 dir Paul Greengrass

I'd also throw in the classic Ryan's Daughter as well but I don't know if it is Irish enough.

P.S. I Love You is a wonderful film. Very emotional and heart-tugging scenes. Amazing Oirish accent from Gerard Butler too. Just kidding.

The Commitments is definitely one of my favourite Irish films along with My Left Foot. Has anyone mentioned The Quiet Man?

The Disappearance of Finbarr is an excellent, excellent film (despite the presence of a young Rhys-Meyers and the fact that it's an Irish/Swedish joint effort).

There's even boob for the more classless amongst us to enjoy and an excellent script for the rest of us. :)

Small Engine Repair (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0488138/) [2006]

"An unprepossessing name for a bittersweet little movie, 'Small Engine Repair' is another low-budget Irish film that is capable of punching above its weight. This debut feature about broken dreams and second chances from writer and director Niall Heery is set in a small town community dominated by the logging industry. It's a coming of middle-age drama superbly soundtracked by songs from the Bottle Rockets, Smog, Willard Grant Conspiracy and John Prine."

This movie is slow moving and those who have seen it will say that was the understatement of the year. It is .... but if you don't have an expectation for something else and just want a flick to sit back and enjoy, something that is not 'trying too hard', something that's down to earth (and no one can deny that) then this is the one for you. Its a great story and you probably know a few of the characters to boot. I thought it was great, really well done and its great to see something of this quality coming out of Ireland.

Really good call, A Face. Small Engine Repair is an absolute gem of a film that never got the recognition it deserved. A friend of mine works for the production company and reckons it's because it came out around the same time as the over-hyped Garage (one distributor in England even mixed up the two films in a conversation with her).

Come to think of it, I've seen very few Oirish comedies(excluding The Most Fertile Man in Ireland which was cack!), any Irish film I've seen are usually historical/depressing. Deffo gonna try and watch some of these suggestions at some point. Irish films worth a mention(apologies if they've already been said):

Angelas Ashes (even thought the book was a great read)

My Left Foot(Christy Brown)
Can't find a decent video for it on Youtube.

Omagh (The song at the end gets me every time, very depressing film to watch)
The Youtube trailer for it is rubbish.

Agreed, Odd Man Out is a masterpiece, stands head and shoulders above most every other Irish film.

Other films out of most people's radar but deservedly regarded as classics of a kind.
The Informer 1935 dir John Ford
The Dead 1987 dir John Huston, though the last scene from the film hasn't been the same since I heard a Navan Man skit, where he (imitating Christy Brown) did the final soliloquy.

Good lad. My favourite movie. I pretty much know it word for word after some 28 watches. David Kelly was one of my heroes. In fact I always said I would try and make his funeral when he passed away and then it crept up on me out of nowhere. I liked Mystic's too but again for David Kelly and Milo O Shea. Another very fine actor. Da with Martin Sheen sticks in my mind.

Surprised Glen Hansard/Marketa Irglova in Once didn't come up. Another I really like.
