Guys - cop on ffs.
Whether I live in Ireland doesn't change the commercial realities of the world RTE operates in. And what does me not living there have to do with it anyway ?
RTE would show whatever attracts a big crowd. And an Irish team in the group stages of Europe would be very big sporting news, and attract a big crowd. So why the hell wouldn't they ? They might have to make a trade-off versuis English teams - but it would be made primarily on a commercial basis, over-laid with their 'obligation' towards Irish programming.
If you think they'd cuit their commercial nose off to spite their face out of some in-built hatred for domestic football - why are they doing MNS every week, and why are they showing the two Drogs games live - even if none of those attracts a particularly big crowd ? I suppose they had to be dragged kicking and screaming to broadcast all of those through gritted teeth as well....
RTE have a poor past record on Irish football, but it has improved a lot recently (and there is room for further improvement). That said, though, there's enough chips on shoulders about them on this site to keep McDonalds supplied for a year...
great post Steve, nothing like a dose of realism based on a balanced view point.

It makes commercial sense for them to show imported U.S. shows like Desperate Housewives but this must be balanced with programmes like MNS and you would think live domestic football as well.
Plenty of mention of sport in the Public Service Broadcasting Charter (http://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=2&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dcmnr.gov.ie%2FNR%2Frdonlyres %2FFA7E4A02-6559-447F-B7A6-D212CFDF99A8%2F0%2FPublishedPublicServiceBroadcast ingCharter.doc&ei=dAmPSJXsAYzy1gabgZXBCw&usg=AFQjCNHP4qrla1Ui6aJdCFgtesdiOM_yTg&sig2=GusTnYEObya50RC2CmTV3w), which is what stops 'commercial realities' turning the station into TV3 or Channel 6. Of course, the political reality is that many in RTE will interpret promoting Irish sport as giving hours of hyped coverage to GAA.

Remember also that RTE are not just a commercail organisation. they are a public service broadcaster. They get a licence fee. This means they have an obligation to show things that are in the public interest rather than commercially viable.
Why isn't the domestic game huge here so? They do not act like a national broadcaster and haven't been doing so for years, yet still increase the license fee every chance they have.
Oh and RTE's deal to show MNS has nothing to do with the international rights. It'll obvioiusly put them in the FAI's good books though
Thats not what ws said by people in the FAI at the time, €5m was the price tag being given not to show MNS. Its good they are doing it ..... but kickin' and screamin' are two words i'd be using here.
Well they mightn't have had the rights to the Man U qualifiers (as they're seperate from the main rights) and anyway, as gspain pointed out, they must show the local team as part of their rights package (They'd also have to provide at least 12 cameras to cover the game...)
But dont they argue that the Nations viewers want to see ManU at the cost of domestic games. They fight tooth and nail on this point when ever it is contested. They would show ManU over an Irish game because there is less work for them.

Exactly, "surely we can be called a sports mad country" .... just look at who is saying it ffs.

On a slightly off-topic note, does anyone know if tickets for the game tonight will be available outside the ground before kick-off?

Simply, Democracy dictates. RTE show what the majority of people in Ireland want to see, if they didnt, they wouldn't bring in any revenue and would be shut down a long time ago. Unfortunately for the EL, the majority of people in this country want to see cross-channel soccer as oppossed to Irish soccer.
DCFC_Steve simply pointed out that from a commercial point of view, and not a "we-hate-the-EL-thats-why-we-dont-show-games" point of view, rte shows what the people want to see.

Are there many countries where a broadcaster can be both commercial and also demand a licence fee?

Actually, thats what I and a number of other posters said. Steve said they'd show the Irish team. But continue to not read the thread and just wade in anyway

Hey, get up outta that ya browl Dodge !! :p
You'd have to admit though, if it were not stipulated in the TV contract then you could nearly see RTE going with ManU over a domestic team. It would be a kick in the teeth but it would show their true colours. I think showing a domestic team is just a chore to them, dragging their feet, reluctantly having to go through the motions. Thats the impression i get off them constantly anyway.

I think using the word reluctant is wrong, their approach isn't the same as it is to a Group stage CL game or whatever, but thats simply down to the interest, if for example they got 500k viewers watching Drogheda tonight, then next year or if drogheda got to QR3 I'm sure their coverage would be better. They put limited resources to it, based on what they are getting back. RTE is a business at the end of the day, its not a charity. Its there to provide Entertainment to the masses.

Proving once again you didn't read the thread. We weren't talking about tonights game, we were talking about what would happen IF an irish team made the group stages.
And it is through gritted teeth. Those of us living here ;) have several friends working within RTE...

have you read the RTE mission statement?>
I believe there were some moves to get RTE to designate programmes as public service so that their use of funding could be tracked. I know TV3 made some noise about this claiming RTE were using licence fees to outbid them on commercial rights. Hard to argue with that.
Going slightly off topic but do TV3 provide their own footage for the GAA games or is it still done by RTE? Just wondering as TV3 have always claimed they did not have the outside broadcast resources.
I am surprised that Setanta have not picked up the rights to some of the less glamourous European games in recent years given their at times threadbare schedules.
I think the best RTE excuse over the years was when they claimed that they could not show a Uefa Cup game as did not have the rights to the remainder of the competition. I may be mistaken but I think around the same time they had lost the CL rights but still showed qualifying rounds for Celtic or Manchester United.

Pity about Drogheda last night, but it was a big step up in class
Just curious, but how much will Drogheda make from their European adventure? From TV rights? gate receipts? etc. And how much will they have to give to Bohs for Dalymount?

If they break even with gate receipts & travel they will do very well as can keep prize money as profit. Estonia & Kiev are not cheap to travel to.

At least you'd imagine they'd be relatively cheap to stay in though..

Talinn's relatively cheap to get to.
Champions league is particularly lucrative in terms of monies received from UEFA though, and Drogheda should do OK.

The money will definitely help Drogs big time
I thought it was an excellent display by drogs, very impressed by gartlan and cahil, overall the balance was really good - they can be very proud of their efforts.
sorry - posted this in wrong section, must be still in shock for giving drogs some praise

Dynamo take a conservative approach to announcing the 3rd qual. draw
http://www.fcdynamo.kiev.ua/en/dynamo/news/27651.html
"Today the 2008/2009 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round draw was held in Nyon, Switzerland.
The winner of the tie between Dynamo Kyiv and Drogheda United (Ireland) will face FC Spartak (Moscow) in the final qualifying round."
While UEFA have caught the impatient contageon of Foot.ie
http://www.uefa.com/competitions/ucl/news/kind=1/newsid=736346.html
"FC Spartak Moskva and FC Dynamo Kyiv are looking forward to reviving memories of an "unforgettable derby" of yesteryear after the former Soviet giants were potentially paired together in the final qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League."
