Biggest story of the week. CA Forum is going tabloid (thread title) for the week :)

BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7518543.stm)

Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic, one of the world's most wanted men, has been arrested in Serbia after more than a decade on the run.

The Bosnian Serb wartime political leader disappeared in 1996.

He has been indicted by the UN tribunal for war crimes and genocide over the 1995 massacre at Srebrenica.

Seems the Serbs are keen on joining the EU so have offered Karadzic as sacrifice.

Testing the waters with Karadzic to see whether they have the support at home so they can handover Mladic, which would really make it hard for the EU to refuse admission.

Strongly recommend 'Death of Yugoslavia' TV programmes on BBC2 after the war. Surperb documentrys, one of the best ever made - it is that good.

Contributions from all the protaganists Milosovic, Tjudman, Karadic, etc all looking to justify their actions. footage from various sources told chronologically.

It was like watching a train crash in slow motion. Painfull viewing but should be compulsery viewing in any modern history slyabus (sp ?)

If you read reviews (not exactly unbiased) online is it apparently Western (US/UK) propaganda.

Karadzic posed as doctor (http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2008/0722/breaking20.htm)

Radovan Karadzic, the former Bosnian Serb leader accused of war crimes and genocide during Bosnia's 1992-5 war, was arrested near Belgrade posing as a doctor of alternative medicine, sporting long hair, a beard and glasses to hide his face.

Serbian officials said he was walking freely around town and earned money from practising medicine.

They said they could not divulge more details because it might jeopardise efforts to arrest two other war crime suspects on the run. They are former Croatian Serb leader Goran Hadzic and Mr Karadzic's military henchman and the man who allegedly oversaw the Srebrenica massacre General Ratko Mladic.

As Mandy Rice Davies said at the Perfumo Trial 'they would say that wouldnt they'

From memory nobody came out of it particularily well,
The serbs - as war mongerors who started it in the first place,
The croats - as opportunists who saw a land grab when the war started and had no hesitation in shafting their erstwhile 'allies' the Bosnian muslims when it suited them,
The EU - as useless when faced with a major land war practically on their borders,
The UK - sympathetic but unwilling to get involved,
Russia, - backing their co religionists the Serbs.
The UN - powerless - see Srebrenica

Bosnian Muslims - generally shafted by everyone
US - unwilling to do anything as it was a European problem which should of been sorted out by Europe but who eventually got involved and sorted it out

(I appreciate the above is a general overview)

I'm in Belgrade at the moment. The family I'm staying with immediately had a toast to his arrest. It's no coincidence that the president Boris Tadic appointed a new chief of security last week. The army were the ones who arrested Karadzic so it suggests he's got them onside which is very important. There doesn't appear to be the kind of negative reaction here that might have been anticipated although preictably the Radical Party have moaned that the new coalition is carry out the orders of its EU masters. Serbia is a long way off EU admission but hopefully this takes them slightly closer.

Maybe a little step closer to moving past a very dark time in the history of the continent. The Srebrenica massacre one of the bloodiest and terrifying moments of that conflict, a moment where all involved should hang their heads in shame and where the weak and unwilling refused to come to the aid of the people massacred. The planes were in the air but no one was willing to grow a set of balls and order the attack that could have prevented it.

Love the headline Pete. I had this real over the top English tabloid writer voice in my head as I read it initially so it had the desired effect.

This story's turning out to be stranger and stranger. He actually appeared on TV at a conference under his alter ego he was that unrecognisable. I was in the city centre last night and apart from one reasonably small vocal gathering in one square life is as normal in Belgrade.

Its amazing how any one can hide with a good beard. Worked for Saddam (ok he was also hiding in a hole in the ground) & The Fugitive before Karadzic.

Anyone else see the picture in the Irish Times today of Partizan Belgrade fans waving a flag of him and doing a fascist salute?

I thought it was funnier that he could pass himself off as a homeopath without anyone noticing. It kind of reminded me of this comic: http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/impostor.png

In fairness he is not stupid as he could not have picked a better field of specialty than Homeopathy as impossible to prove one way or the other.
