Scott Carson signed with West Brom from Liverpool, he'll surely start over Kiely. Dean is thirty-seven years old but from what I saw in the Ireland/Colombia match he has a lot left in him to give us. Shay Given can't keep fit and Paddy Kenny isn't really an option anymore, so there is an outside chance that Kiely will play in at least some of our upcoming qualifiers. Where do you guys see him playing this season? Stay at West Brom to warm the bench or get transferred or loaned out back to the Championship?

I see him playing in goals, in some capacity at least, though he could slip into the left back position if needed.

I could see him doing a job in midfield, all things considered.

Why not? He's said he would come back to play for Ireland, he's still first choice for Sheffield United, and we're not spoilt for choice in goals.
Brian Murphy should be considered, having seen him in action he is one of our best options. A far better option than Kenny and good Catholic Boy anyway.

Brian Murphy as well. Seriously I think we should be giving players a shot. Murphy's biggest problem is his kicking, but Given is not exactly world class in that regard either.

BTW why don't Bohs fans chant 'Murphy for Ireland'.....I've only got back watching Bohs recently, and against Bray I was expecting a few of these chants.

Why is "Paddy Kenny not an option"

He's not a very good 'keeper and he's off his rocker anyways. If you need proof, watch a tape of our 5-2 defeat in Cyprus.

I wouldn't blame him for that game, if anything, he kept the score down with some top class saves. Ireland and Kilbane in central midfield, plus a clearly out of form Andy O'Brien in central defence were far more at fault.

There is no guarantee that scot carson will displace dean kiely.I suppose because he is english and coming from one of the bigger clubs there would be pressure to play him.His star waned quite a bit in the second half of last season at villa.

Paddy Kenny should be in every one of our squads on quality alone

3.25m isn't chump change, even nowadays. What is his weekly wage compared to Kiely's?
we really need kiely playing first team football so i think he should go back to the championship to get regular games

Yes there is, WBA dont have 3 million to spend on a reserve goalie. Sadly I think they would probably not have bought a new keeper but probably felt compelled to buy hiim to keep him away from Stoke (a serious rival in the relegation stakes).

What? As someone else said, West Brom don't have £3m to splash about on reserve goalies.
Is it possible that Carson is better than Kiely? (I think so)
Of course not.

At this moment in time it's not possible no. Carson is very average and would need to improve a hell of a lot to be better then Kiely for me. I wouldn't even say he's better then Paddy Kenny at present. One for the future? Maye. The next Richard Wright? Quite possibly.
Mowbray obviously feels he needs a younger keeper, the club can spin it that they've bought an international and that it's a statement of intent. I think Carson will start after they've splashed on him but think it's a bad call for Mowbray if he makes it. There's a reason why Villa didn't take their option on him after looking at him for a year.....

i hope you're right but i suspect if a team like west brom are spending big money for a club of that size that he will walk into the 1st team

Any team that has just been promoted will need two decent keepers anyway- sometimes you'll get blown out and need to bring a new guy in to change things up a bit. Look what Sunderland did by dropping Gordon for a couple of weeks and bringing in Ward. It rejuvenated Gordon, and gave the team a boost as well.

Middlesbrough need a keeper now that Mark Schwarzer is gone to Fulham. I can see Kiely doing a job for them.
Now that Carson has signed he should definetley move on, be it to a Championship or Premiership club.

According to football365, the deal is dependent on Blackburn signing a new goalkeeper, probably Paul Robinson.
What are the odds on Blackburn getting relegated again....? ;)

Why do clubs keep doing this to Kiely? Portsmouth bought James who is only as good as Kiely and Carson has been dodgy ever since the England Croatia debacle. Something must be wrong with the guy for 2 different clubs to do this. Charlton were happy to let him go too. I have met him and would not think it could be his attitude, certainly not his ability.

I remember reading somewhere (either a letter to the editor, or more likely on a message board) an English fellow suggesting calling him up. He was ridiculed for not realizing Kiely was a full Irish international, but I thought it was a good sign that our reserve keeper was good enough to be in that conversation. Wouldn't happen today.

664 league appearances, 759 appearances overall - I think he managed his career just fine
