im sure i would remember the controversey???
There was never any controversy on Di's death in Westport. People remember where they were when they heard of her passing, there was a book of condolonces in the town, people watched her funeral on tv and some people actually have Diana pictures in their houses. There was a sense of gloom at the time. I have never, ever, heard a bad word spoken about Di in Westport.

Ffs the op was about the irish team wearin black armbands. I didnt intend this thread to become a misty eyed recollection of the death of an insignificant celebrity.

I think that the fact that mother therese died at the same time made it a bit easier to swallow. No big deal then so is somebody desperately searching around for something to be offended about now.
I've a mental image of how the team would have lined up if they had marked the passing of Diana and Mother Theresa for the same game.
A row of solemn International Footballers, heads bowed, wearing black armbands and T-Towels on their heads.

:D:D
Wolfie, your mental image has passed through the Information superhighway and into my head, and now Squire, I am laughing with the image of their solemn tribute if the Queen has popped her clogs.

Get over it lads, ffs. As someone pointed out, they were all either British or living in Britain anyway.

All i wanted was a yes or no answer. I was not looking to be offended either. Andy Townsend was great player for Ireland who always gave his all but he has gone right down in my estimation now. Hate his smarminess on TV anyway. Right Little Englander he is now.
Waht are you on about , I watched most of the 2002 world cup in england and townsend was class , he had Sir Bobby Robson and his fellow commenators in knots and even had him referring to Ireland as we for most of the tournamanent, he got in under dodgy circumstances but relished his chance at international football and always gave 100% unlike some of our more illustrius home grown players , maybe he had a go at Di once she had a thing for sportsmen in the 90s.

I disagree, and they had an Irish jersey on at the time, so they were representing us.

Fair enough, but who cares if they did wear armbands? She never did anything against us, and she wasn't even Royalty, so whats the problem?

Precedent, or more likely selective use of a black armband for dead royal from every royal family in the world.
Oh and Townsend is 100% British. He's spoke about wanting England to beat Ireland in euro 88.
Professional pride made him an excellent player for this country, and he's obviously still fond of the country. But he's still considers himself British. I've no problem with this.

Says the guy who keeps posting on here.
Well she wasn't Irish and there was no reason for irish players to do this. And it was corny as hell. Fools in green jerseys.

So what though? It was corny as hell, as was everything to do with her death, but so what?

So it shouldnt have been done. No non Irish person should be celebrated in this way (and trust me, I ain't no armchair republican)

I agree, but does it affect me in any way shape or form when something like this happens? No, not at all

Didn't we have remembrances for the WTC attacks?

Another thing I didn't agree with. Did we have anything for the victims of the Tsunami? (and I@m not sure whether we did in a football snense either...)

It is when it comes to whether the Irish should hold public marks of respect for another nation's loss

yeah i know, but the thing is if these muppets had their mind on the important stuff, like trying to win the bloody game and qualify, etc

I'm not saying they're similar in any way except that there was a massive media circus, an outpouring of grief be it misplaced or not, effected somewhere else and we commemorated them in some token way.
The squad wearing armbands was a gesture on the part of the squad, not the Irish nation. A lot of them were subjects of hers and others would've had the sort of affection seen for her in the days after her death. If it gave the lads an extra bit to play for, bravo Andy Townsend. Did we win that day?

They won 4-2 away from home and then went to Lithiania and won again to make the playoffs where we lost to Belgium on a refereeing error. They weren't muppets.
Lady Di RIP may have had no connection with this country but she was certainly hugely popular. No interest myself but she was an incredibly popular figure who did a lot of good work and was part of the Royal family of our nearest neighbour where most of our squad earned their living.
did we wear armbands after the WTC attacks then? i think that the league had a minutes silence... again, i would have more sympathy for the people who died on Sept. 11 than a princess who died on the N11...
furthermore there were irish people who died in the Sept. 11 attacks. 2 who worked in the towers and 1 lady on one of the flights. Reason enough in my opinion.

 Do you think I'm a monarchist or something? If they're British citizens then yes, they are subjects of the royal family. Not my cup of tea but then its not my problem, I'm not British.
